The American Cardinals are solidly behind Paul Wolfowitz as the next Pope.

So its official now. Kardinal Ratzinger is pope. I´m not a catholic, but this makes me somewhat happy. At least he is German (and even better, Bavarian )!

Afaik he was a very close companion of the pope, even personally. He once said he must do the "hard things" to protect the pope from too much critique and he defended the inquisition as a modern instrument unlike it was shown in the "Black Legend", though he saw its weaknesses and brutality as well...

Ah well, let's see how it all enfolds. I was both surprised and not that Ratzinger is elected. Surprised, because I was expecting an Italian Pope. Not, because he's conveniently old (old enough not to be Pope for 26 years, according to what the sources in Vatican say) and also because he was pretty much the right hand man of the former Pope.

At least the church understood that Europe must be in the centre of its interests since if Europe is lost, the Catholic future will not be a bright one, thats clear. A pope for South America, like I though would come, would have been a signal for them, but not for Europe.

Now the church must fight for Europe or losing ground once and for all and being replaced in one way or another...
