Default CHINA PREPARES FOR OLYMPICS Drop in Executions Leads to Organ Shortage

Drop in Executions Leads to Organ Shortage

With the Olympics in Beijing just 500 days away, China has begun cleaning up organ trafficking practices. Not only have exports been banned, but with fewer prisoner executions, a major source of organs has dried up. The result has been a kidney shortage in South Korea.

A criminal in China being brought to his execution.

The preparations, it is said, are far ahead of schedule. With 500 days to go before the Olympic flame is lit in Beijing for the 2008 Games, construction of 31 venues in the Chinese capital is "progressing at a tremendous pace," International Olympics Committee president Jacques Rogge said this week. Even the new medal design was presented on Tuesday.
But the planning isn't just taking place on the streets of Beijing. The government is also trying to clean up some of its more blatant human rights violations -- like the export of kidneys from death penalty victims and organs harvested from minors. And it's creating organ shortages in South Korea.
According to a report last week in the dailyChosun Ilbo, the already long list of South Koreans waiting for organs is getting longer -- with the number expected to top 10,000 by the beginning of the month -- and their chances of getting a transplant are getting slimmer with China having decided to ban organ exports. In addition, executions in China have dropped sharply since the Chinese New Year in February, meaning that one of the primary sources for exported organs has dried up, organ brokers told the Korea Times.
Because South Koreans traditionally shy away from donating their organs, the situation for the seriously ill in the country looks grim. Furthermore, prices for organs have skyrocketed, with kidneys now going for $37,000 whereas prior to China stiffening organ export rules a kidney could have been had for $27,000. China has likewise elected to no longer give foreigners priority when it comes to organ transplant waiting lists.
China, though, still has a long way to go to clean up its organ harvesting image. David Kilgour, Canada's former secretary of state for Asia-Pacific, accused China in this week's Sunday Herald of continuing to take organs from jailed Falun Gong practitioners. Kilgour released a study last summer concluding that several thousand organs have been harvested "à la carte" from Falun Gong prisoners since 1999. "I realize it is difficult to comprehend, but prisoners, especially Falun Gong prisoners, are being killed for their organs in China right now," he told the paper. "They are executing prisoners à la carte so that wealthy recipients get organs."

It is insane how everyone just happily assists the Chinese dictatorship as they become the world's most powerful nation. I just saw yesterday a report on BBC World a story about a new car factory being opened in China. The news story made it seem so fun and exiting that MG Rover, a British company with long traditions, had been bought and the entire factory had been moved to China. This Globalism is a kind of suicidal religion which makes people throw good judgement out the window.

It's interesting how the 'center of world power' for the past several hundred years has followed where the labor is cheapest. In the 19th century you had the British Empire with its cheap and slave labor, then it was the US in the 20th with cheap labor, and lo and behold, now we are told by the former head of the World Bank Wolfensohn, that the 'West Must Prepare For Chinese, Indian Dominance where with these countries incredibly large populations, they no doubt can provide the most cheap labor of anywhere else in the world. The link I've provided is a Chinese website where they are celebrating this. I don't think they realize yet it means simply that their people and country will be ravaged, as capitalism has done to many another country.

It certainly is. With globalisms' ideology of multi-culturalism it is a cult, only needing a cult leader to be full blown.

To say no to it the multi-culturalists have attempted to define as 'hate'. It's absurd, not to mention quite sick.

I agree, globalism and neo liberism are like religions; with their prophets like Milton Friedman, Ronald Reagan and Margareth Thacher; their churches like IMF and World Bank...

One big problem is that academics, journalists, economists and stock market traders are very likely to believe the lie that we can become "knowlege based" economies and leave everything else to China and India because they do not work in manufacturing or agriculture themselves.

The end of globalisation will come with the energy crisis nonetheless. Costs in transport are starting to make imports from the Far East less attractive in terms of profits. Still not noticeable, but it will get worse.. better.

We may also hope increased fuel costs will bring the end of booze fuelled holidays by large masses of people.

I hope that you are right. There is an area of beach land which it used to be considered as not a nice place for developing a tourist area, but which is was long. Recently I got shocked when I saw the mass resort that it has been turned into overnight. I wondered the kind of tourism they will be hitting, and a friend told me that they had opened a big office in... China!!!
