I don't think Afrikaneers are not an European people, in the sense that their Nation identity formed in South Africa, while before getting there they had no peculiar national identity, they just were colonists who belonged to several European peoples. Experiences such as the Boer Wars and the Apartheid contributed to develop it.

Four points:

1) You may be surprised how many Irish moved to South Africa over the years.

2) When I speak of Ireland I always mean the whole island of Ireland. Ireland is one nation and the current partition is a cease-fire line. I look forward to a united Ireland, but it must be with the consent of the people of Northern Ireland.

3) I think the citizenship of any immigrant should be decided by a jury of a nation’s citizens; or at least by letters of recommendation by several citizens. If the South Africans can fulfill this then they can become citizens of Ireland. (Don’t forget we have rugby, sailing, horses etc. in common with South Africans)

4) If South Africans want to move to the Netherlands, and if the Dutch will have them, then I say okay. It is none of my business.

In comparison, would you welcome "refugees" from Argentina or Uruguay?

I visited the country and, although there were some, I did not notice a particularly large number of Irish. But of course those who are actually Irish or of Irish parents should return to Ireland.

Including the imposed British settlers? That would be like agreeing to stop immigration in England in a few years from today, subject to the consent of immigrants already there.

That's hardly an argument towards a similar culture. Most countries in Europe have football and other sports in common with Africans.

Indeed. That's entirely up to them. And if you think about it, The Netherlands is indeed in bad need of a people who, besides being many of Dutch origin, they probably preserve traits of the Dutch culture better than the Dutch themselves.

No. Only those who are of Spanish parents or grandparents. Others, only in limited numbers and under proper scrutiny. There is much Italian and German.

Culturally, the Irish Sea is not a great divide between civilizations. The natives of one island are not alien to the natives of the other island.

Strange. In the 80s, while there was not yet immigration in Spain, a number of immigrants from Argentina (not many) were responsible for the label Sudaca as a derogative which has survived until today and which is used for a different South American people.

In other words, there was a noticeable cultural clash. Argentineans do have their own identity which, although it hails from Spain in many aspects, in many other aspects it hails from Italians, Germans and others. And that makes a difference. Whereas a limited number of selected Argentineans are perfectly assimilable with time, this is not as generalized as you would like to see it.

But, sure, there more we lose our own identity to this globalised world, the more that other people become more easily assimilable. Is that what you have in mind?
