Default Russian Empire in colour

http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/empire

http://www.ummagurau.com/art/russia

http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~dellaert/aligned

Some Russian (forgot the name, its mentioned in the first link) guy at the begining of the 1900s developed an ingenious (for the time) method of capturing colour images by taking 3 photographs through 3 different coloured filters, and then later, projecting the images of the 3 ontop of each other. Somewhat crude, but it worked. The plates were then forgotten for several decades, before being rediscovered and restored and touched up and the final result can be seen on the sites above.
Some of them are very beautifull, and the colours, well see for yourself.

First linkie is limited in pics, but has explanations and history behind how and when they were made.
Second linkie has more pics, and some explanations of what those pics are, and the third one has the most pics of all, but of poorer quality and no explanations.

Enjoy

They were heavily retouched, but on most the composition is great,
and the atmosphere is anti-neurotic

Depends on how you define 'colour photograph'.
Techncly those photographs are not on colour, but rather its several photo (negatives) of the same thing taken through different filters. Light is then shone through the three filters and the resulting three images projected on top of each other.

They are great. Almost as good as modern day pictures.
