Basically this Italian woman has seen a "nomad" (a Gypsy) inside her house with her 6 month baby in her arms, about to steal the baby. As she cried for help to her father, the Gypsy has run away but she has been caught by the neighbours.

This Gypsy had been caught for theft 15 days earlier, and released by the police.

The police have saved the Gypsy this time from being lynched by the neighbours.

When I was a child, my parents used to scare me by saying that gypsies will come and steal me if I don't behave myself. I believe that this child theft is nothing new in the gypsy behaviour pattern.

Same thing here: "If you don't behave, the gypsies will come and take you away".

We were also scared with tales of Pikeys and Gypsies stealing us as we sleep. I would never camp out the back garden lol.

My parents never said about gypsies. I think I was rather well behaved anyways :p

Though I was scared of the giant bugs I perceived to be the bed bugs so I always went to bed when I was told. ,-,

I don't think it's something said in northern Europe, seems to me that the saying is based in southern Europe. My parents used to say the same thing to me, starting when I was 5 and refused to go to the dentist, "If you don't behave, gypsies will come and steal you."

ok, it seems that scary stories about Gipsy thiefs is common in whole Europe...here comes Gipsies, run away, run away, they will steal you from your bed, run away,run away, lalalalalala

Don't be too much on the optimistic side: gypsies do steal babies.
