The theory that Venetians (Veneti) were Slavs is mostly pushed by slovenian historians (guess why). But this theory is mostly abandoned because the old venetic language has nothing to do with slavic, and infact it is a Italic language (today extinct). It is widely used that Veneti were a proto Italic tribe.

Acoording to some inscriptions written in the Old Venetic, it would even seem to be not-so-distantly related with Latin-Faliscic subfamily of Italic languages.
