Yes and No. Sometimes it is difficult to find information that has a perspective that is similar to your ideas/point of view.

No. It can be a source of information but it can't compare to speciality journals or even books by established, reliable writers. Anyone can post anything on the internet and this is done all the time. Sometimes, you can get a bit or detail if you already know the context yourself and it can be reliable. If I were a teacher and someone turned in a paper using only internet sources, I would commission another student to completely debunk that point of view using internet sources as a lesson to the class.

There's popular Internet and scientific Internet. Just as there are retarded and intelligent people. Your job is to tell them apart.

I also think "yes and no". Just like radio and television it can be a news source, though the way in which the news is presented is almost always biased. Some websites like Wikipedia are not reliable as basically anyone can edit them. But then again, a lot of books are not reliable either. There is a lot of junk on the Internet, but there is also a lot of junk offline. If one knows exactly what one is looking for, the Internet may prove useful. I'd say it's just like in a library... one has a multitude of books (websites) to pick from, one just needs to make the right choice. There are e-books and other sources one could use. Then there are various projects such as nationalist sites that gather information to open people's eyes. Official sites may also prove useful e.g. the official website of a political party.

In general, I agree with what Phlegethon has said..
Quote:
For the most part of it, the internet is an excellent first source for quick reference which must be checked with actual reliable sources. Unless you know with much certainty that the site and the author are a reliable source on the matter.

Or alternatively just ask me.

Thats no easy yes or no question since it depends on what you already know. If I would know nothing about a certain subject, and wouldnt even have simple referencebooks, it might not be the right decision to begin with searching in the i-net since so much crap is around and you might be trapped in every nonsense you get by chance...
But if you have a certain knowledge and background, you can select by yourself and know which authors, articles etc. are at least no total crap...

So, according to what you said above, you find information "that has a perspective similar to yours" more reliable or worthy than unbiased information - which may not coincide with your own opinion on a specific subject -. Is that so?

Yes and No, I agree with Strenghtand honour. You must compare the diffrent sources of info like for everyother mean of information. yet, the problem with Internet is that any idiot can make public his rubbish and give it the looks of serious information ... but I suppose that gets into the popular vs scientific context
