Default Big Mac dishes out its monster World Cup burger!

A special "treat" for England, France and Germany: insanity in a bun.

Big Mac dishes out its monster World Cup burger!

McDonald's will launch a giant burger for the World Cup.

The burger will be 40 per cent bigger than a Big Mac, reports The Mirror.

"We are a burger business. Our traditional menu - hamburger, cheeseburger, Big Mac and chicken sandwich - is front and centre of our plans. Everybody loves a burger and there is nothing wrong with that.

It's time to be proud, to say 'We're a good burger company'," the tabloid quoted new president, Steve Easterbrook, as saying.

[...]

McDonald has seen its revenue grow by 30 per cent in the US while sales in Britain have been flat since 2002 when the healthier menu was brought in.

It was also interesting to read in another article that the burger - said to contain 714 calories - will be marketed only in "Britain, Germany and France" in order to pump up sales (make people fatter?) in those countries.

But some in the British government at least are trying to stop McDonald's from offering what they view as little less than poison:

Quote:
The Liberal Democrat MP, Steve Webb, has launched a petition against the burger, amid fears the marketing link with the World Cup will lure children to wrap their jaws around the 300g, two-burger circumference.

He said: "Adults can make their own minds up, but this is a product that will be pushed widely during the World Cup, and a lot of that advertising will be aimed at young people.

"Youngsters will be pestering their parents and ending up at McDonald's and eating more burgers, fatty chips and sugary drinks. It's the link with the World Cup that I'm particularly bothered about."
According to the article, "The fat, salt and calorie levels are almost equal to the total a child should eat in a day."

Of related interest:

How about a Krispy Kreme hamburger?
Minor-league club offers 1,000-calorie sandwich with cheese, bacon, donuts

The minor-league team Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League will begin selling a concessions item that is not for the calorie-conscious, ESPN reported.

"Baseball's Best Burger," as the Grizzlies call it, will consist of a hamburger topped with cheddar cheese and two slices of bacon — all between a "bun" made of a sliced Krispy Kreme Original Glazed donut.

The burger is not for the faint of heart — literally — and will contain roughly 1,000 calories and 45 grams of fat.

Apparently this burger is based on another culinary delight, the Luther burger:

A halved Krispy Kreme donut magically turns a burger classic into a world famous sign post of the gluttony of America.

That's even worse than the deep-fried Mars Bar!

The traditions of the Irish people are the oldest of any race in Europe north and west of the Alps, and they themselves are the longest settled on their own soil
- Edmund Curtis (A History of Ireland: From Earliest Times to 1922)

The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth.
For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish.
- Edmund Spenser (writer, and British Government Official in Ireland, AD 1596).

The renaissance began in Ireland seven hundred years before it was known in Italy. And Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, was at one time the metropolis of civilisation.
- Arsene Darmesteter, Professor of Old French and Literature

Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation.
