Oh I already pre-paid for it so when it's done I immediately get it.

To be honest, it's silly to take the p out of such a project. Transit is an important aspect of modern infrastructure. Linking the space (via atlas) to the human aspect is important and perhaps it will be helpful in historical and perhaps modern studies .

To be sure. But there are standards for a doctoral dissertation, particularly from a top-ranking research university. To give a stray example, Switzer's doctoral dissertation on algebraic topology was published as a book about thirty years ago, and to this day remains one of the few monographs on the more arcane aspects of the subject. Everyone in the field knows about it, and has used it in one way or another. It is a relevant and original contribution to the subject -- which is what a doctoral dissertation ideally should be. The dissertation of this 91-year-old gent will adorn a few coffee tables (i.e., his immediate family's) and will promptly pass into oblivion. That's why I call his degree "honorary."

Well, true, and I am aware of the standards for a doctoral dissertation (._. been around doctoral students for my entire life, thanks father)... I just think that the work does have some worth... I don't think his immediate family will have any copies, to be honest in my experience the disserter (is that even a word??) will have a copy and the supervising prof will have a copy.

On an off-topic note I recently dug up my father's thesis (and one of his books) ._. It was interesting!

But to be honest, how easy is it to write something original these days in a topic? In Switzer's (and my father's) time, it was much easier to write something original (not because of a higher intelligence but because there was not as much written).

Well, it will certainly interest some specialists, as well as some amateurs. But not many. Some people doing research in modern history of Britain will certainly use it.
