I haven't taken much (actually, any) time to look into the figure of Ghandi, but if I did I would do it into some particular direction..

Ghandi was born in South Africa and though he is said to have opposed to Apartheid, he was an Indian. Under Apartheid, Indians enjoyed a status below that of White Europeans but above that of Black Africans. They even had their own sort of separated parliament and could vote it to electe their members there. That's not bad for Indians, who have in their social customs the caste system. I doubt it that SA's Apartheid was any worse for Indians than it was British rule. In fact Indians thrived in their businesses during Apartheid. As a note aside, it is curious to see that one of South Africa's current office ministers, and one who is among the most fanatical against the SA's White population, is an Indian or part Indian.

Going back to Ghandi ... oh wait, I've found on a quick search something that could prove my suspicions right:

President Putin actually made a joke which referred to Gandhi's saint-like reputation:

Apartheid formally existed after WWII. Furthermore the special status enjoyed by Indians (more rights then blacks) wasn't put into effect until the mid-1950s, they were gradually during the period of apartheid given more rights then blacks (beofre WWII Indians yended to be treated worse then blacks). The seperate Indian parliament was only approved in 1977 and didn't exist in the constitution until 1982. In 1984 the first elections to this parliament was held and only 16.2% of Indians voted.
