Naomi Campbell is to set up a model agency for black women.

She said she is planning the move because fashion magazines are “sidelining black beauty”.

The 37 year old supermodel, who graced the front cover of Vogue at the age of 17, said it is virtually impossible for black models to make the front cover of glossy magazines.

She said editors consistently chose less prominent white models over black ones.

“Black models are being sidelined by the major modelling agencies. It is a pity that people don’t appreciate black beauty,” said Campbell.

“I even get a raw deal from my own country. For example, I hardly come on the front pages of London’s Vogue magazine.

"Only white models, some of whom are not as prominent as I am, are put on the front pages”.

Anya James a black model from London told the Independent today that Campbell’s words rang true.

“From my experience as a black model, I have to work 10 times as hard. You hardly ever see a black model in the public eye, but no-one seems to be speaking up about this imbalance,” she said.

Campbell was speaking in Malindi resort town in Kenya and says she is going to start her talent scouting in that country.

“I don’t want to quit modelling until I find that black models get equal prominence and recognition by the world media and information instruments” she added.

If successful, Campbell won’t be the first to find super-models from Africa.

Iman, David Bowie’s wife is from Somalia while the distinctive looking Alek Wek is from southern Sudan.

So Naomi Campbell is an evil racist? I mean, she is founding an agency exclusively for black women.

I don't get it. You don't hear Asian women complaining that there aren't enough Asian models posted on European magazines and vice versa. You don't hear Greek women complaining that there aren't enough Greek women on German magazines and vice versa. Why are "black" women in "white" countries such an exception?

I would say this phenomenon is an import from America, and is thus far less prevailent in European multicultocracies.

They should found associations for Black scientists and engineers!

Why would any ethnic or racial or whatsoever group have to be concerned about being underrepresented in that perverse, demeaning and ugly crap known as fashion industry and about having too few "models"? Every time I take a walk in my town, I always see women ten times more beautuful than most of those anorexic and psychologically molested "models". on the catwalks.

There is a "Future Black Lawyer's Association" here at my uni. I was talking to this Nigerian in my house (who I end up talking to out of politeness) and he called it racist!
