Tintin’s Stepmother Agrees to Ban Naughty Racist

The Hergé Foundation agrees with yesterday’s decision of the international bookseller Borders Books to ban the comic album “Tintin in the Congo” from its children’s section and move it to the adult section of its stores.
The Hergé Foundation manages the estate of the late Brussels writer and illustrator Hergé [Georges Remi, 1907-1983]. The Foundation, run by Hergé’s second wife, Fanny Vlamynck, holds the copyrights to Tintin and other Hergé characters.
Borders’ decision is a reaction to a demand from the British equal rights body, the Commission for Racial Equality, to stop selling the album, which dates from 1931. According to the CRE the book is “old-fashioned, racist claptrap.”
The Hergé Foundation acknowledged today that the album “contains stereotypes that might shock contemporary readers.” The Foundation emphasized that the album is republished as a collector’s item and, consequently, approved the decision to move it to the adult graphic novels section, where “Tintin in the Congo” will now be stored next to “The Adventures of a Lesbian College Schoolgirl.”

The Commission for Racial Equality has labelled a Tintin book racist and criticised a high street book chain for stocking the title. The CRE says Tintin in the Congo makes black people “look like monkeys and talk like imbeciles”. It has called on Borders to remove it from sale due to what it deems offensive content. A CRE spokeswoman said: “This book contains imagery and words of hideous racial prejudice, where the ‘savage natives’ look like monkeys and talk like imbeciles. [...]’
The CRE was contacted by a Borders customer who saw the book in a London branch of the chain last month. A spokesman for the chain said it was moving the Tintin book from the children's to the adult graphic novels section of its stores.

If only they had banned this comic book years ago; they could have saved millions of lives in the Congo.

The sad thing is that these fools actually think a Tintin cartoon can do so much harm that getting it off the shelves is a top priority. Does anyone else get the strange impression that we now have a governing political class which thinks words and images are more powerful than real people and things? It is like a primitive idol-worshiping religion on a Pacific island.

Well, the fact is that Hergé himself had to change some parts of "Tintin in the Congo" (and other albums) as in the unreleased version the blacks appeared much more stereotyped than in the one version we know.
