Because it's easy to pick on somebody well below your size? Macedonians are in difficult position nowadays. They are surrounded by the unfriendly neighbors to say the least, and are facing the internal problems because of the growing Albanian population within their borders. I believe they often perceived the Serbs as a friendly nation, and now they are rendered defenseless because the Albanians have tightened the band around their country by taking the Kosovo region. The way I see their situation is that they can hardly control the situation within their borders, let alone the political pressures and blackmails coming from their neighborhood. If I was a Macedonian I'd be pissed at my neighbors.

All Bulgaria's neighbours are bigger than Bulgaria (except for Macedonia). Why Bulgarian history and identity have never been so controversial?

Because nobody disputed it? Hmmm, although I've read a Serbian myth of Bulgarians being of Serbian descent once.. Nothing serious, but such things do exist. How would you feel for instance, if Romanians all of a sudden started to claim that all Slavs who were assimilated by Bulgars were actually the same ones who lived on the Romanian territory and thus are Romanians?
I mean, everything is possible in these days...
