It's more likely that your surname originates from Russia, although it might as well be a misinterpretated Bulgarian name.
EDIT:I searched an online phone book of Sofia and I found 10 people with the surname Gmitrov, which is somewhat close to Gmitro, but still it's a rather unusual surname even in Bulgaria. |

No Gmitro, but there are 104 with the Gmitrowicz surname in Poland, 50 of those in Zakopane, southern Poland... quite close Slovakia.
