Iceland has won Miss World 2005, watched from the audience by her mother – herself a former contestant in Miss Iceland 1983. For the third time in the history of the pageant, the Miss World crown is tonight worn by a beautiful young girl from Iceland.

The first time I saw a photograph (the b/w one) of Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir, I was simply speechless. To say that she is beautiful is -in my opinion- an understatement.
Yes, I know: I'm probably being subjective here, but I am pretty convinced that most of you share my subjectiveness...

Not bad, but she looks completely atypical judging by the dozen or so Icelandic ladies I've met in m lifetime (all blonde/red-heads with ultra-Nordic features). Does she have some non-Nordic admixture? Still, given that my preference is for dark/med types she certainly gets my vote.

Since my knowledge on matters of race is quite simply insufficient, I suggest that someone of the Anthropology & Genetics Section would care to shed some light on this question...

There is a brunet (often more brachycephalic and broader-faced) minority in western Norway and Iceland. The percentage is higher in the Icelandic population, probably also because of "Celtic" thralls from western and northern parts of the British Isles.

Her face is Alpinoid, possibly of the Strandid type Lundman wrote about. She may show paedomorphic traits without being particularly Alpinid. It is difficult to classify (especially young) females.

I am glad that you brought up the question of paedomorphism, for it reminded me of an article I read almost a year ago.

Paedomorphism, especially frequent among Nordish females, poses a problem to the field of physical-anthropological categorization. The race-specific facial features of a paedomorphic female are not fully developed, and thus even the keenest eye may be left at a complete loss as to what racial type she belongs.
