A few superstitions popular with my Grandmother. The 'unlucky' practices drove her to distraction if anyone dared test them.

Luck / Bad Luck:
Never put new shoes on the kitchen table.
Never open a umberella indoors.
Never whistle indoors.
The first days of the week are the luckiest.
If you find a feather near, your guardian angel has left a sign.

If boys significantly predominate among newborn babies, then soon there will be a war.

UPD: I heard it was once proved experimentally (by exterminating the male part of a group of frogs). The mechanism of it is unclear, but I'm not so sure that it is just a superstition also in the case of humans.

Something I picked up somewhere and still believe...

Sneezing three times or more in a row means someone is speaking poorly or bad about one.

-Putting out a fire with water or sand is bad. (pagan influence) Actually even now, when we are grilling something on a real fire and the wood is still burning, we're sitting and waiting, till it goes out naturally, not spilling water or sand on it. Tradition.
-Stork on the roof - household will have children soon (proven in my family)
-Falling bread on the ground and not picking it up. (old people even blow the -dust out of it and kiss it)
-Coming back home (because of not taking some important item with you), when rushing somewhere
-Putting keys and money on the table
-Itchy nose - you will drink (alcohol)
-Itchy left hand - you'll get money
-Mopping floor in the evening (you'll 'wash-out' your health)
-Brushing hair in the evening (something pagan probably, connected with devileses)
-Swaying legs while sitting somewhere high ('you're 'swaying' devils children')
-Not covering mirrors, when someone dies in the family (a spirit might (not) see itself and be scared)
-If someone knocking to the door and there is nothing after opening the door (Ms.Death has come). Also proven in my family

We have so many of them.

I don't personally take superstitions serious, don't get me wrong they are fun. My grandmother is fanatical about them she has one for everything. No shoes on the table...no cutting your nails on a Sunday..and my personal favorite: never measure yourself, your measuring yourself for your coffin.Oh, damn grandmas are weird. I find myself following them even though I know they aren't logical.

Over here, that's bad manners, not superstition.

Yeah, I figured that..I never put my shoes on the table..just because it isn't something most of us do, it doesn't seem polite. People in my family connect it to bad luck and supersition.
