I play poker sometimes with my friends. Also used to play it online on 'bet and win poker'. But that's about it. Never thought about serious gambling, so don't really have a clear opinion on it.
I agree that if it becomes an addiction, it can lead to serious problems for the gambler itself, and his family, friends etc.

Let us make a sharp distinction. Playing poker with friends, even if it is connecting with betting on small sums of money is nothing, a distraction.
On the other hand, real gambling, like in a casino, is a serious vice and perilous addiction for anyone indulgin therein. |
