Manual work help stay out, depression is born mainly from our unhealthy lifestyle, lack of physical activity, lack of company and of a love relationship.
Anyway the best cure is an healthy environment and a lot of physical work. Staying in a neon lighted crammed office won't help at all but worsen things ... PS I was recently ordered an antidepressant for my backache problems, I have some little damage to my spinal chord (sometimes they are used as painkillers for in such situations). In two days I felt I was developing hallucynations and unmotivated fear. Guess what I did.

Although depression here is not anything near to the levels of northern Europe, it is known but as a modern pathology. My grandfather, who was a surgeon M.D., used to say that depression was largely unknown in his times because men had families to feed and to educate, and there was no time for a pathology which is the result of a society based on leisure and on senseless consumption.
