Electoral trends of Vlaams Belang

below a graph displaying the results of the vlaamsbelang(blok) over the last 8 years, showing a peak in the 04 elections and a downfall since then, the downfall is the result of partly a new law that gives immigrants the ability to vote and partly the result of the flemish christiandemocratic party that showed to be able in delivering quite stable governmental work

other reason could be that after more then 10 years the party should make some changes at the top and brainstorm over a new strategy since the last election campaign was unbelievable weak

Which party policies and/or socio-political (or socio-economical) events would you link to the sharp rise in the 2003-2004 period?

The lines in the graphics suggest a continued growth in votes until 2007 in contrast to a sudden fall in percentages starting in 2004. Clearly the immigrant vote factor.

I take it that Kamer in Flemish means Chamber (in Afrikaans it does).
Growth there continues but with a strain since 2004.

2004 was the year of the trial and the resulting banning of the then vlaamsblok, they received immense sympathy for it, since the process was obvious a political one. they were banned under laws of only recent date and one can say specially made and accepted to hurt the vlaamsbelang and if im right it took over 3 trials to get them convicted, so they played the chart of freedom of speech

they still progress in the chamber with about 1.1% because the previous election for it was in 2003(federal elections) one year before the peak of 2004 (for the flemish parliament), and so they lost about 5% in comparison with 2004

I'm not really aware about the political scene in Flanders, but could it be possible that an alleged "reactionary" new position in the Christian Democrats has taken some votes from the Nationalists?

In the same way it happened in France between Sarközy's UMP and Le Pen's FN.

yes true, its comparable with the 'sarkozy effect', although the christian democrats already proved themselves in the flemish government being able to produce good governmental work, so an electoral victory on the federal level was obvious
