While Sweden Slept

The approach of the New Year and departure of the old inevitably brings a flurry of "year's best" lists. This even applies to nations, which some organizations make it their business annually to rank in order of wealth, quality of life, and what-have-you.
Surprisingly often, the Nordic countries come out on top. This placement is usually a reflection less of objective reality, however, than of the list-makers' enthusiasm for the Nordic welfare-state model. The criteria, in other words, are formulated in such a way that the Nordic countries will inevitably end up on top. Hence Norway, for example, is repeatedly named by the United Nations as the world's richest country — forget that prices and taxes are so high that even business executives lunch on dry sandwiches brought from home in aluminum foil.
Now it's Sweden's turn. The Economist Intelligence Unit, associated with the Economist magazine, has awarded the title of world's most democratic country to Sweden. For many observers, this is not only wrong — it's staggeringly, outrageously misinformed.
Sweden is, after all, a country in which the people are fed by their political, press, and intellectual establishment an unvarying diet of propaganda promoting the socialist welfare state, demonizing Israel, and whitewashing Islam. As for America, the official view was neatly captured in a post-September 11 editorial in the nation's largest newspaper, Aftonbladet, which assured readers that the terrorists who attacked New York and Washington weren't Sweden's enemies but simply hated " U.S. imperialism," a reasonable position given that "the U.S. is the greatest mass murderer of our time." Such views, taught in Sweden's classrooms and enshrined in Sweden's state-approved schoolbooks, are reiterated daily by Sweden's mainstream press organizations, all of which are either government-owned or government-subsidized.
Dissent is powerfully discouraged. In Sweden, whose murder rate is currently twice that of America and where Muslims now constitute over 10% of the population and are disproportionately unemployed and prone to violence, the Swedish press routinely depicts America as crime-ridden. Polls show that the majority of Swedes are deeply disturbed by their country's dramatic social changes and highly critical of the policies that brought them about. Yet the crime and violence generally go unreported, so only rarely does any of the criticism seep into the press. Though two-thirds of Swedes question whether Islam is compatible with Western society, this issue is simply not open for public discussion.
To quote Jonathan Friedman, a New Yorker who teaches social anthropology at the University of Lund, "no debate about immigration policies is possible" because Sweden's "political class," which controls public debate, simply avoids the topic. Recently, the city of Stockholm carried out a survey of ninth-grade boys in the predominantly Muslim suburb of Rinkeby. The survey showed that in the last year, 17% of the boys had forced someone to have sex, 31% had hurt someone so badly that the victim required medical care, and 24% had committed burglary or broken into a car. Sensational statistics — but in all of Sweden, they appear to have been published only in a daily newssheet that is distributed free on the subways.
Instead of reporting on such worrisome findings, politicians and the press alike focus on the evils of America and Israel. Last year, for instance, Sweden's state-owned TV network ran a series of "documentaries" about America that included Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine." Viewers were protected from the fact that it had been shown to contain lies and fabrications. The series also included a sympathetic account of Stalin's atomic spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, whom Swedish TV described as having been executed not for history's most colossal act of treason but "for their Communist sympathies," and something called "Why We Fight," which explained America's military actions as motivated by the avarice of military contractors.
Swedish book publishing is similarly unbalanced. Recently Michael Moynihan, an American writer based in Stockholm, toted up the English-language political books that had been translated into Swedish since September 11. His long list included several works apiece by Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore, plus volumes by the communist historian Eric Hobsbawm, the anti-American journalist John Pilger, and the "Holocaust industry" critic Norman Finkelstein. On the entire list, only one author was not a leftist.
When voices of dissent do break through in Sweden, they're often punished. During the runup to the Iraq war, the Swedish government censured the independent TV channel TV4 for running an "Oprah" episode that presented both pro- and anti-war arguments. TV4 was charged with violating press-balance guidelines when in fact its offense was being too balanced — it had exposed Swedish viewers to ideas from which journalists had otherwise shielded them.
Only one sizable party in the country, the Sweden Democrats, articulates most Swedes' concerns about their country's immigration and integration policies. Again and again, it has been the object of breathtakingly undemocratic treatment by the political establishment. Earlier this year, for example, the government closed down the Sweden Democrats' web site because it had published a cartoon of Muhammad. Stig Fredriksson, head of the free-speech organization Publicistklubben, complained bitterly. But the incident was hardly reported in Sweden — and, of course, barely caused a ripple abroad. If the Bush administration had closed down a Democratic Party Web site, there would be scare headlines and editorials thundering about dictatorship — and rightly so. But when Sweden's rulers did it, it was apparently acceptable — because they did it in the name of political correctness.
Sweden Democrats have been the targets of events that recall China's Cultural Revolution. Staged "people's protests" by members of the "youth divisions" of other parties have led to the firing of Sweden Democrats from their jobs. A few weeks ago, a junior diplomat was dismissed when it became known that he was a member of the party and had criticized his country's immigration policy. On several occasions, thugs loyal to the ruling parties have broken up Sweden Democratic meetings and beaten up party leaders. And this is a nation in which a party led by an admitted communist was, in recent memory, part of the ruling coalition.
The Sweden Democrats enjoy considerable public sympathy. But given Sweden's oppressively conformist political climate, that sympathy is of necessity largely sub rosa. Mr. Friedman has suggested that one reason why the party has no seats in Parliament is that Swedish elections aren't really secret — other people at the polling place can look at your ballot and see which party you support. The stigma attached to voting for the Sweden Democrats is just that strong. Another reason is that the major parties have worked together vigorously to keep the Sweden Democrats out of the public square. The success of this collaborative effort is reflected in the fact that Sweden is the only major Western European country whose legislature contains not a single representative of a party critical of its immigration policies.
In 1972, the British historian Roland Huntford titled his book about Sweden "The New Totalitarians." He is echoed by a number of observers today who describe Sweden as an example of "soft totalitarianism." Are they right? That's a matter for debate — though it's a debate that won't take place in Sweden.

I find this article quite interesting. I am living in a country that has no free media, no right of free expression but state controlled media. I can verify the situation in Sweden. The political establishment is keen in outlawing any debate about mass-immigration, Islam and the influence of Jews in policy. Often enough Jewish influence on USA's policy is mentioned and Israel harshly criticized, but criticizm of Jews in Germany immediately is considered as "anti-semitism", which can be punished severely - like lèse majesté in the times of absolutistic monarchies. It is often Jews that criticize mass-immigration and the so-called Islamism in Western media though, although this fact vastly is ignored my mass-media many nationalists, especially NS, come to the conclusion Jews try to stir up hate against Islam in order to preserve the "judeo-christian Western" culture, and try to forge an alliance with "Islamists" which they consider as freedom fighters. The reality is many Jews are heavily involved in destroying native European culture, I'd like to mention Daniel Cohn-Bendit, MP for the Green party in EU parliament, for example. But there are also Muslims in this parliament, Vural Öger for the Social Democrats for example, he did not keep it as secret he is promoting open border policy and EU membership of Turkey so Turkey can achieve what the Osman Empire failed to achieve - the conquest of Central Europe. Not really a fan of "judeo-christian West" myself - I have no problem with posting and quoting Jews that criticize this policy, these articles are valueable for propaganda and prevent me from anti-semitism charges. And I do not believe in claims that state all established media is controlled by Jews and exclusively serve Jewish interests - there have been to many anti-Israeli reports for that- that they lie and fight any sort of patriotism can be said without a doubt, of course.

You are right about the swedish left-wing elite and how they lie to our people about just about anything. I think it is interesting how the leaders of these people (the left-wingers) really don't seem swedish at all, they don't have swedish surnames (ohly, schyman, ruwaida) and they sure as hell don't look like swedes either. Yet the average swede accepts that some leftist pieces of sub-human scum bad-mouths his on country, and I this is the big problem. Nothing makes me more pissed of than seeing young swedes like myself, often twice as big as the niggers and arabs that oppose them, stand down when they are confronted by immigrant scum. This is not only a swedish problem as there are lame idiots in Norway, Denmark, Finland and Germany too, but it seems like some people have been castrated or something.

The most wonderful thing I know, though, is when dumb ass immigrants fuck with the wrong peolpe; rural swedes, preferably from the archipelago or Småland, because these guys don't take any shit from arabs and blacks. When I was in the army I had a friend from Småland who beat the living shit out of something like 7 arabs at a nightclub in Stockholm, a(please refrain from using racial slurs. this is not stormfront or a WN site) tried to stop him with tear-gas but that only pissed him off more. The rest of us were just standing there laughing because he cleared out the whole club alone. It is wonderful to see immigrants get hurt!

The Coming Muslim Takeover of Europe

[Book review of While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam is Destroying the West From Within by Bruce Bawer; published February of 2006; 237 pages; $23.95]

This stunner of a book about Continental Islam has two main themes. The first is that Europe has a horrific Muslim immigration and reproduction problem. European Muslims are expanding their numbers almost exponentially, and they are not being assimilated or integrated into European culture. This radically new and explosive demographic, according to the author, is not being converted to Western liberalism or adopting Western life—styles.

While Europe Slept argues that while Europe is currently only about ten percent Islamic —— vs. two percent for America —— if present trends continue it will only take a generation or two for Muslims to become the majority. The once—noble Continent will become what intellectual fellow—traveler Bat Ye'or in 2005 called "Eurabia." The shocking claim by Bruce Bawer is that well before 2050, most of Europe is likely to become an outpost of Islamdom governed by Sharia. Europe will be alien to Western culture and an enemy of Western Civilization.

The second theme of this almost shattering book is that Europe today is a hellhole of leftist multiculturalism, far worse than anything in America, and even far worse than almost anyone in America suspects. American expatriate Bawer —— who has lived the past ten years in various European countries, mostly Holland and Norway —— is almost uniformly horrified by every country he resides in or visits. According to him, political correctness and multiculturalism are "a habit of thought that in America is an annoyance but in Europe is a veritable religion."

Bawer excoriates his European friends for their propensity to display phony "respect" and "understanding" of the various foreigners in their midst, especially Muslims. He blasts their cult—like belief in the mantra of multiculturalism and their unlimited "belief in peace and reconciliation through dialog," even with Muslims who emphatically reject peace, reconciliation, and dialog as methodologies or ideals.

While Europe Slept also makes the interesting observation that there is virtually no American—style "religious right" to oppose growing Muslim power. Virtually the whole Continent is atheist or de facto atheist. Thus in Europe the religious right is the Muslims.

This leads to some odd political terminology and alliances. Bruce Bawer consistently champions what he calls "the liberal resistance," but he doesn't seem to know where to find it or even how to describe it. What he does describe, in sickening detail, is how much the multicultural left utterly protects the Islamic religious right. These two have formed an evil alliance which seems all but unstoppable in the heart of Western Civilization.

Bawer himself is a little confused about what he is. He edited a book slamming America's multicultural left called Beyond Queer: Challenging Gay Left Orthodoxy (1996). But he's also written a book called Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity (1998), which trashes the religious right. In the end, Bawer calls himself a part—time "libertarian" and is essentially a strong Western or classical liberal.
This book is an easy and fun read. But it's also horrifying. And despite the speed with which its mere three chapters can be consumed, it has plenty of documentation for its claims from almost every nation in Europe. Bawer, who is also a translator, speaks Dutch and Norwegian fluently, and is conversant in several other European languages as well. This insider—perspective helps provide quotes, incidents, and stories from all over the Continent —— many based on personal experience.

In the end, this book essentially writes off Europe(!). It argues that America is the last hope for Western Civilization and the world. Although' While Europe Slept tries to be positive at times —— and does offer suggestions to ameliorate the coming demographic nightmare —— ultimately Bawer concludes

"Europe is steadily committing suicide, and perhaps all we can do is look on in horror."

Perhaps the most terrifying part of the book is the way Muslims everywhere are already confidently planning to rule Europe and make it part of the caliphate. A popular Swedish t—shirt reads simply "2030 —— then we take over." With France still only 12% Muslim, the leading Parisian newspaper Le Monde seems to have already surrendered. In 2004 it praised France for "the fact of its having and accepting the role of the first Muslim country of Europe."

How did Europe ever reach such a dead—end? The problem began rather recently, in the late '60s and '70s, with a temporary labor shortage and subsequent special "guest worker" programs. But the shortage is long gone and the Muslims are still there. And as Bawer points out repeatedly, they aren't being integrated into the various populations as in America. Almost all Muslims live in suburban ghettos and are somewhat rejected by the native and slightly nativist whites. The Muslims, in turn, utterly reject their new country and its Western liberal ideology. The vast majority —— even second generation kids —— aren't fluent in the different, local European tongues.

And this growing cancer is wildly exasperated by a phenomenon unknown in America called "fetching" marriages. Males from Europe use "family unification" laws to being in illiterate females they've never met from their former country, and then marry them —— usually as uneducated teenagers. The young girls are then kept at home in a virtual prison where they reproduce wildly. These new citizens never learn the local languages or customs but they do qualify for vast welfare benefits and quickly produce more Islamist—oriented males and slave—like females. Then the process starts all over again.

The effect of all these Muslims on the life—styles of Europeans is simply remarkable. Homophobia is way up, as is opposition to abortion and divorce. "Honor" killings are rampant as is female "circumcision." In many parts of Europe all women must wear a scarf covering their face lest they be deemed whores and "for everyone." By right, any Muslim or Muslim gang can rape any uncovered girl. Afterwards, the girl is properly killed by relatives to end the "shame" of her family.

The rapists, naturally, go unpunished. And because native Europeans differ on this practice, Muslims scornfully think of all white men as weak and effeminate, for not being able to control their women. They think of all normally—dressed Western women as honorless low—lifes and unloved harlots, valuable only for group violation and subsequent termination.

Among the nightmare statistics cited by the book are these:

1. 80% of the women in Oslo's shelter system are Muslims fleeing abusive families, husbands, and boyfriends;
2. Danish Muslims make up 5% of the population but 40% of the welfare rolls;
3. refugee—friendly Switzerland is already 20% Muslim;
4. the world's most wonderful city (in my view) Amsterdam is now majority Muslim;
5. 70% of all French prisoners are Muslim;
6. the four London bombers that killed 56 in July of 2005 received almost a million dollars in welfare benefits.

And the bad news in this book just keeps coming. Bruce Bawer and While Europe Slept are relentless. This book is praised by Mona Charen, Abe Foxman, Daniel Pipes, and Victor Davis Hanson, among others. But it doesn't offer much hope. Because of a kind of maniacal political correctness, otherwise civilized and enlightened Europeans seem doomed to Muslim domination in the near future. They are incurably infected with multiculturalism and a subsequent

"unprincipled spirit of compromise and capitulation that is guiding today's Europe, step by step, to the gallows."
