New 'union' with Sweden takes shape Aftenposten Norway June 7, 2005 Norway and Sweden ended their uneasy union 100 years ago, but the two countries are cooperating more than ever on a variety of fronts. A surprising number of Norwegians and Swedes think a new union could be a good thing. ![]() It's been 100 years since Norway broke out of its union with Sweden, but the two countries are good friends. The dissolution of the Norwegian-Swedish union ended peacefully in 1905 and the two countries are good friends, despite tensions during and right after World War II. A key issue contributing to the dissolution was Norway's desire for its own consular service for representation overseas. Today, things have come full circle, with Norway and Sweden even sharing some embassies and consular services. The Nordic countries built an embassy complex in Berlin, for example, and Norway and Sweden share a consulate in Phuket, Thailand. "That's a good start," comments Member of Parliament and former University of Oslo dean Inge Lønning of the Conservatives. Lønning also wants Norway to join the European Union and is the man behind the slogan "From Union to Union - 100 years outside is enough." Norwegian soldiers will also soon start serving under Swedish command. As newspaper Dagens Næringsliv reported Tuesday, the parliament quietly decided late last week that Norway will contribute troops to a new EU military force. The northern division of the EU force will consist of Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Estonian troops, and since Sweden will contribute the most with around 1,100 military personnel, Swedish officers will have command. The two countries' royal families also have close ties. On Monday, when the Swedes celebrated their own flag day, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit paid a visit to the Swedish Embassy in Oslo, to offer their congratulations. [source]

Quite far back is where Tradition starts.
![]() Interesting. I'll search for a better source than wikipedia for this Union of Kalmar. In the meantime, I found what would be the alleged flag for the Union of Kalmar: http://www.fotw.net/flags/dk_ku.html http://www.alexheick.dk/historisk/rigens_banner/s.htm ![]() Funny. The opposite colour to an old Spanish flag (yellow cross over red background).

Are you kidding?
I lived several years in Denmark and in Sweden. I will never forget the hatred of MANY norwegian citizens when they were discussing Europe and Union. The hate unions, doesn´t no matter which kind of union. They are nationalists in a bad way. By the way, I´m democratic and I think democracy (founded in the ancient Greece) is the only way of living like a human being. ![]() ![]() |

The traditions of the Irish people are the oldest of any race in Europe north and west of the Alps, and they themselves are the longest settled on their own soil - Edmund Curtis (A History of Ireland: From Earliest Times to 1922) The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth. For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish. - Edmund Spenser (writer, and British Government Official in Ireland, AD 1596). The renaissance began in Ireland seven hundred years before it was known in Italy. And Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, was at one time the metropolis of civilisation. - Arsene Darmesteter, Professor of Old French and Literature Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation. - Heinrich Zimmer, Professor of Celtic and Sanskrit, Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences |

My opinion is that the Scandinavian countries are a kind of alliance.
This alliance is the “Political Scandinavia” and Finland is outside. Unfortunately the head of this alliance is England. And England’s head is… |
