Irish Government Unveils Civil-partnership Bill
Dublin, Jun. 24, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Irish government has revealed the terms of proposed legislation that would extend legal recognition to same-sex couples.
The Civil Partnership Bill would establish a system for registration of domestic partnerships, set out the rights and duties of the partners, offer legal protection for shared property, and provide for the dissolution of such partnerships in a manner similar to legal divorce. “This legislation is keenly awaited by many cohabiting couples, and will be of great benefit both to same-sex and opposite-sex cohabiting couples,” said Dermot Ahern, the Irish justice minister.
