Slight Lead for Berlusconi's Coalition
ROME - Silvio Berlusconi and his coalition enjoy a two- or three-point lead. This is the latest from the exit polls taken at 3 PM by the Consortium for Sky tg24 television. The center-right People of Liberty Party, along with the separatist North League and Autonomous Movement Party, carried 42 percent of the vote. The center-left Democratic Party, joining forces with the Italy of Values Party, obtained 40 percent of the vote. It is, in short, a neck-in-neck race to the finish line. More specifically, the Democratic Party is in the lead with 35 percent of the vote, and the People of Liberty Party is hot on its tail with 34 percent of the vote.
The Italy of Values Party obtained 5 percent, the North League 7 percent and the Autonomous Movement Party 1 percent. As far as the other parties are concerned, the Rainbow Left carried 4.5 percent, the Center Union 5.5 percent, the Socialist Party 1 percent, the Right 3 percent and all other parties combined 4 percent. Similar results are in from the Senate, where it all seems to hinge on regional elections. Berlusconi’s conservative coalition carried 42.5 percent of the vote, compared with 39.5 percent for Veltroni’s liberal political grouping. The People of Liberty Party has 34.5 percent of the vote, the North League 7 percent, the Autonomous Movement Party 1 percent, the Democratic Party 35 percent, the Italy of Values Party 4.5 percent. Others: the Rainbow Left, 5 percent, the Center Union 5.5 percent, the Socialist Party 1 percent, the Right 2.5 percent, all other parties combined, 4 percent.
