European Nationalists Plan New Pan-Continental Party

Right-wing leaders from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria and France announced plans Friday to form a pan-European nationalist party, drawing a stinging rebuke from leftists who called it "completely absurd." The plan for the new "European Liberty Party" was announced in Vienna by Heinz-Christian Strache, leader of Austria's Freedom Party; Jean-Marie Le Pen of France's extreme-right National Front; Frank Vanhecke of Belgium's Flemish Interest Party; and Volen Siderov, the head of Bulgaria's ultranationalist Ataka party ... "Patriots of all countries: Unite!" declared Strache, whose party in the past has been accused of anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic statements.

Now, this comment is rich:

"The project of European integration aims to be a peaceful cooperation of EU member states who unmistakably oppose nationalism," said Elisabeth Grossmann, a leading Social Democrat official. The right-wing leaders' plans, she said, were "completely absurd and contradictory."

What is utterly absurd and contradictory is to pretend to be in favour of Europe while assimilating millions of non Europeans and even wanting non European countries to join in.

Anyway, truth been told the group looks to me as a little bit too eclectic.

Well I don't really like the word 'pan-European' or anything with 'pan-' in it's name. I'm not opposed to European nationalist parties working together though, we'll see what they'll manage to do.

Don't let yourself be tricked by the naming. I don't think that there would be many pan-Europeanists there. More likely the word has been used to mean "Europe-wide".

Something that I've liked has been the statement that they would look forward to integrate Nationalist parties from non-EU-member European countries.

Well it's more like united nationalist/far right parties of Europe, it's just that Muslim immigration seems to be the biggest issues of western/central European nationalists.

What we have here is a loose association of parties which basically have absolutely nothing to agree on except that they don't like muslims and gypsies. That is not only not nationalist but also a totally fragile project of egomaniacs. I expect them to collapse as soon as the parliamentary group.

That's it exactly. But that's what strikes a chord with the populace whom see the local situation in those terms and don't care to see the bigger picture. I'd imagine a more nuanced approach would see their representation sharply whittled down after awhile..

Can you provide some arguments for this statement? That they dissagree on all other issues? After all, they all have some kind of "Europe for Europeans" program.

Well it is nationalistic. Not that only being against gypsies or muslim immigrants makes you nationalist, but it is one of nationalist characteristics.

I'm afraid that you need much more than just a "Europe for Europeans" [common] programme.

And it is more a matter of not sharing common grounds rather than simple "disagreements". Some simply not sharing grounds because they have none to share or to dispute.
