It seems to me as if patriotism in the way he depicts it, arises from a re-action against other peoples, as opposed to nationalism that arises from a pro-action in favour of the own people. I think that nationalism is necessary before patriotism, or that patriotism must stem from nationalism, for it to be more than just a mere reaction.

I fail to understand why some ethnic Russians want so desperately some additional square kilometers of land when the nation is dying. This is really impossible to understand. I hope nationalist feelings will grow, not "patriotic". To be a patriot of modern Russia equals to be anti-Russian in ethnic sense, actually, because current Russian constitution even doesn't recognize Russians as a nation.
In the case of Tatarinov, it's easy to understand. He is, obviously, judging by his surname, doomed to be cosmopolite and patriot, not nationalist. Last edited by svin; Monday, December 10th, 2007 at 17:41. |

Bravo! Exactly my thoughts, Svin. To call oneself a patriot of Russia these days equals to nothing, if not worse. You might as well be anti-Russian. It's different, of course, in little mono-ethnic states. In Russia nation should go first and then everything else. Frankly, I tend to view vast Russian territory more like a burden to Russian people, than anything else. It's always dragging national self-consciousness down. |

We have the same problem in the nowadays multi-ethnic France, but at least, you in Russia can speak freely about ethnic Russians. In France, it's even forbidden by the law to make mention of the ethnicity in any official document or poll for exemple. Like if it didn't exist. |
