It's war if Kosovo breaks away, say Serbs

A Serbian extremist group, which claims to have thousands of members, lodged a call to arms yesterday with the Serbian government should Kosovo declare independence.

Hadzi Andrej Milic, the leader of the so-called Tsar Lazar Guard, said "a violent invasion will follow in the case of a unilateral declaration of independence" by Kosovo's ethnic Albanians.

The Albanian National Army, branded a terrorist organisation by the UN in Kosovo, claimed that it has support throughout the province and was prepared to fight off any threats from armed Serb groups.


Internationally brokered talks are under way between ethnic Albanians and Serbia on settling the long-standing dispute over whether Kosovo will become independent.

The province has been under UN control since 1999, when Nato intervened to stop a Serb crackdown.

Kosovo's Albanian leaders have threatened to declare independence unilaterally if negotiations fail.

Serbia says it is willing to grant autonomy but not independence.

I doubt it. They would not dare to attack KFOR, which is responsible for peacekeeping.

Well, it looks like the Serbian Militia has been gathering men for some time, and while they do not have the power to face the KFOR, they could engage in guerrilla warfare and expect that the Serbian Army comes to their rescue, backed by Russia.

And you should also expect Kosovo Serbs to give full support to the miilitia.

Putin is not Yeltsin, and Russia can keep Europe by the balls through gas and other businness related pressure means.

Hope the Serbians will retain Kosovo and send kfor rightfully resting in our comfortable barracks.

Most Serbs don't view KFOR as a peace keeping force. Most view it as an occupier.

If KFOR is a peacekeeping force then where has it kep[t peace? all it does is allow albanians to arm themselves, loot non-albanians homes. When KFOR came in they had 50,000+ troops and they weren't able to prevent Albanians from expelling people or do anything to prevent violence. While Serbia at most had some 35,000 troops in Kosovo.

Plus. If a war breaks out it won't be the Serbian army involved it would be like Bosnia where the fighting was done by paramilitaries and Serbia doing nothing to prevent them from arming themselves. Only in the western media will people say "Look what the serbian state is doing>"

Yes, I am aware of that, but I still think that there will be no war. Protest, demonstrations, and even separate acts of violence are pretty possible, but not war.

War involving the Serb army no. War involving Serb paramilitaries, yes (technically this wouldn't be a war but an insurgency). Overthrow of the Serbian government through revolution, yes -- the group behind the "Tsar lazar guards" called for this before the guards were formed.
