Default Greek leader declares election victory

Greek leader declares election victory

By ELENA BECATOROS, Associated Press Writer

ATHENS, Greece - Conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis declared victory in Greece's parliamentary election Sunday, although official results showed he would have a slimmer majority in parliament.

Karamanlis overcame widespread anger and accusations of incompetence following devastating forest fires that killed more than 65 people last month, and a challenge from a split in the right-wing vote to win a second four-year term.

"Thank you for your trust. You have spoken loud and clear and chosen the course the country will take in the next few years," Karamanlis said as thousands of party supporters thronged the streets of central Athens.

Official results from nearly two-thirds of the votes cast showed Karamanlis' New Democracy party ahead with 43.3 percent, while the opposition socialist PASOK party had 38.5 percent.

His statement came minutes after his rival, PASOK leader George Papandreou, conceded defeat.

"The people have chosen and their decision is respected. PASOK fought hard but it did not succeed" said Papandreou, who heads the party founded by his father, former Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou.

I was interested to see how well the nationalist Popular Orthodox Rally party did in these elections - they gained 10 seats - and also how well the the far left performed - a combined vote of nearly 1 million. Do any Greek Stirpes members know what the Greek media's reaction has been to the success of The P.O.R?

Asking a woman her opinion on politics ? Don't be silly.

Let's rather wait for Milfiades opinion.

Wink Re: Greek leader declares election victory

Sorry I missed this...

Like everything else in Greek politics, the L.A.O.S. party is a joke (and in rather poor taste at that)... A colorful circus consisting of opportunists, former Nutzis, religious fanatics, raving lunatics, homosexual patriots, televangelists, cheesy pop-porn singers and even....christianized gypsies (in an attempt to denounce themselves as a racist party).

To put it more accurately, this was one of their candidates:

+ YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

(Most of) you don't understand Greek but you don't need to.... Body language is universal.

(notice cheap plastic greek flags parading in front of her boobs at the end of the clip!! )

But no, let's wait for Milfiades' opinion.....

Blood Axis - I take it you have a low opinion of LAOS then?!

They seem to have taken populism to the extreme. We have our own version here - they're called UKIP.

I made a comment on LAOS candidate but I could see a warning coming so I edited it.

There is not much to be added in Blaxis' opinion, christian-oriented parties are kitsch.
