Austria probes 'army Nazi video'



Websites, including YouTube, have been used for Nazi propaganda


Austria's authorities are investigating a video which appeared on website YouTube, apparently showing uniformed soldiers exchanging Hitler salutes.


The defence ministry said a number of people were being questioned.

The film is said to have been shot on a mobile phone at an army barracks in the western city of Salzburg.

Defence Minister Norbert Darabos said there was "zero tolerance" for such actions. Any display of Nazi propaganda or symbols is a crime in Austria.

"Those involved will have to answer to the army and the law and take the consequences," Mr Darabos said.
In the video, which has now been removed from YouTube, one man in uniform is seen stretching his arm into a Nazi salute while another one shouts "Heil Hitler!", reports said. The men could face up to 10 years behind bars if found guilty of the offence.

Of course it is absurd to be sentenced for 10 years for a hand gesture.

But what I meant is that it is infinitely stupid to film yourself making that gesture and send it on the internet, when you live under such a regime and you know you are in danger of losing your job and freedom.

Reminds of a case I saw on the news a few weeks ago. Some idiot filmed himself driving at a high speed while screwing the steering wheel off and putting it back on. Now, that's super cool, but not as cool as putting it online for everyone to see.
He didn't get ten years, though.

Being a jackass just for the sake of it is one thing, but being a jackass pretending to be a political activist is a totally different story...

Not to mention that there's nothing practically political or ideological about the aforementioned gesture.
It's not that they were even caught attending a demonstration, spray-painting slogans or expressing some 'heretical' opinion in public --doing the Nazi salute in your uniform and putting it on the internet is a purely exhibitionist and shallow gesture that is as sane and mature as the act of waving your genitals in front a blood thirsty alligator

In the old days they also had to take an IQ test. Either IQ tests are not required anymore, or they have been replaced by a questionaire based on the basic series of Sesame St.
