The leader of Germany's far-right NPD party has been charged with inciting race hate after proposing Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess for a Nobel Peace Prize. If convicted, he could face three years in jail.

The fact that the head of the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD), Udo Voigt, proposed Hess for the peace prize during a speech last Saturday to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Hess's death only confirms how twisted the worldview of right-wing extremists is. Apart from the fact that a leading Nazi was never a likely contender for a peace prize, nominations to the Nobel Peace Prize are by invitation only and nominees must be alive.

The eccentric proposal could now have unpleasant consequences for Voigt. German police in the eastern city of Jena said Friday they have charged the NPD leader with inciting racial hatred. If convicted, Voigt could face a jail term of up to three years or a fine.

There have been renewed calls this week for the NPD to be banned (more...), following last Sunday's attack on eight Indians (more...) in a small Eastern German town.
Hess, who was captured in 1941 after he flew to Scotland with the intention of brokering a peace deal with the United Kingdom, was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Nuremberg trials and died in Spandau prison near Berlin in 1987.

It is remarkable that they mention Arafat, 1994 Prize Nobel, but they don't mention Menachem Begin, 1974 Prize Nobel, the leader of the Zionist terrorist group Irgun and the man who ordered the terrorist bombing of King David Hotel in Jerusalem, in 1946.

I don't know what to say any more. I suppose that I should congratulate Udo Voigt for nominating Rudolf Hess to a prize held by so many criminals, and for the importance of this nomination for the German people in particular, and for the Europeans in general. I.e., no relevance whatsoever, but with such an ample support from the public, he can afford such eccentricities..

First of all, it is an utter stupidity to propose for the Noble prize a dead man (independently of whether the person in question was criminal or a good man).

Of course, we can conjecture that his "proposal" was just hypothetical, in sense: If Rudolf Hess were alive, he would be a candidate for Nobel prize. But it is retarded nevertheless.

Secondly, bear in mind that it's coming from Der Spiegel. Aptrgangr, being German, can better explain what kind of newspaper it is. So I'm waiting for confirmation from more serious sources, to form my opinion on the subject.

Thirdly, it is monstruous to send people to jail just for stupidity. If that were the case, prisons would be overcrowded and the whole penitentiary system of a country that would enforce such a measure, would collapse immediately.

Fourthly, the main issue here to be concerned about isn't his strange "idea", but the media attention focused on that. The media choose what is to be considered important and what not, what is to be publicized and what not. So the media terror is something we should worry about much more than about occasional stupid remark of this or that politician.
