I think it's because large distances and low population density. While the majority of our population lives in the south-western corners of the country, the population is still more equally divided when compared to Sweden and Norway that have about similar populations per land area. So there's less city-yuppies using public transportation and more hillbillies driving the small countryside roads with their crappy 80's cars.
