No. Football was rarely a gentlemen's came. Think about it, football is probably the cheapest sport you can play. All you need is a ball.

I remember reading that one of the predecessor games similar to football played in the medieval ages was a gentlemen's sport. however, I can't find this information and to me it seems rather ridiculous. all you need, as i stated, is a ball and you can play it.
