The nations commonly known as Celtic (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany) share a high frequency of the Y-Chromosome haplogroup R1b, to different degrees.
This points to an ancient Western origin prior to the spread of the Kelts, and in common with Southwestern populations. Not surprisingly then the incidence of the various types of Mediterranid and Atlantid phenotypes. Alpinids (or alpinicised) are also common in Brittany, and Nordid admixture is more common in parts of Scotland. Generally speaking, you may think of the current 'borders' of these meta-cultural concepts as the product of a process of aculturation.

There are three main haplogroups in Europe:
R1a-most common in Slavic-speaking countries, highest frequency reported in Poland and Russia R1b-most common in western Europe and British isles, highest frequency reported in Ireland and Basque country I1b-most common in the Balkans subclade I1b1*-highest frequency reported in Croats from Croatia and Herzegovina subclade I1b1b-highest frequency in Sardinians subclade I1b2-closely related to Scandinavian I1a haplogroup

Have a look at this image. It might help a little.. to complicate things further
![]() It is a map and charts of the distribution of y-chromosome based (male lineage) haplogroups in Europe. This map represents the refugia of the three main haplogroups during the Glacial Age. And the spread of the three haplogroups as the ices retired. They are Paleolithic markers. ![]() This other map refers to posterior Neolithic markers into Europe. ![]()

The big picture is this: We're all a mix of the 3 main haplogroups, and apparently E3b to lesser extent.
It's all about diversity.
