Serb Church In Montenegro Property Row
Email a friend Save article Print article Increase text size Decrease text size Digg this SPC Archbishop Amfilofije 10 March 2008 Podgorica _ The Archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro has urged top politicians to stop the seizure of property owned by the Church. Archbishop Amfiloje Radovic demanded Montenegro’s President Filip Vujanovic and Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic to stop the parliament speaker from handing over some churches and monasteries to a non-government organisation and so “preserve the public peace”. In a letter to the two officials, Radovic alleged that some properties had been erased from the land register as belonging to the Church and threatened that neither the Church nor citizens would tolerate those acts. He did not specify further but said “we deeply believe that your state functions and the understanding of the human justice have competency and power to go public and recognise the problem and prevent it from spreading.” Montenegro has its own Orthodox Church but the Serbian Orthodox Church, SPC, is refusing to recognise its autonomy. The two Churches have been at odds over property among other issues. Although Montenegrin by origin, Radovic is known as one of the most outspoken SPC archbishops. Montenegro peacefully seceded from Serbia in 2006, being the last out of six republics of former Yugoslav federation to go independent. Source: vijesti.cg.yu / Balkan Insight
