I found this clip where a Finnish youtube video featuring the military march "kauan on kärsitty" (from the Russo-Turkish War 1877-78, where also Finnish troops fought under the Russian Empire) is being shown and discussed on Bulgarian Television.
Could some friendly Bulgarian here explain what it's all about? Here's the clip from Bulgarian TV:
And here's the original clip with the march:

Mm, okay, let's see.
-F: Our way through history now leads us to a very distant Northern country- Finland - a country with glorious and exciting history. -M: Do you mean the movie we made about the Finns a few years ago? -F: Let's not just call it a movie. It's a memory about something which really excited me. We found that a really important part of the Finnish military history, their military pride, is connected with Bulgaria and a really emotional moment. Their most famous wartime song is sung about Bulgaria. Let's see this material. Where do we look for all the answers nowadays? In the internet, of course. (the clip starts)...This is one of the most popular Finnish military songs. Every single man on the street in Finland can sing it. It's uploaded in Internet, together with pictures of Finnish heroes, fighting for the Bulgarians' liberation: "We've endured to the cold and the hunger in the Balkan." Yes, the most liked Finnish song, is about our history. About the thousands of Finns who have sacrificed themselves in the name of our liberty. A few years ago we were in Finland and a Finnish Member of Parliament told us the story of that song. While he was telling about the story, his eyes teared. He took us to the monument which gathers together Finns and Bulgarians in Helsinki twice an year. -Finnish guy: "We are celebrating here the 24th October, the day of the Dolni Dabnik battle in 1877. In this memorial are the names of all the heroes which died in the battles. The other date which gathers us together is the Bulgarian national day - 3th March. Do you know, we've got many songs about that war, but this song is the most popular. We call it The Home-Coming Song. Everyone here can sing it." A few hours later...we are interviewing the Finnish president Tarja Halonen: -President: This is a great part of our history - the battles of Bulgaria. Our soldiers tell us about the tough days in the snowy Balkan mountains by this song. When we, Finns and Bulgarians, consider our common future, we got start from this great moment. It's a pity that the young people don't know a lot about the past nowadays. This part of the history is binding us strongly, because the liberation of Bulgaria returns the country back in the European family." Narrator: " Just a few hours before we leave Helsinki we found a cassette with "The Home-coming Song" on the reception counter. Someone have layed it down with the idea that we, the Bulgarians, also have to hear that great song, the most popular Finnish military anthem. A song about Bulgaria, heroism, and coming home. I'm sorry for the inaccuracies, but that's my English ![]() And of course it's the perfect moment to express our gratitude to the Finnish people for helping us to liberate. ![]()
