According to Wikipedia:
"Forest metal is metal music that mainly talks about nature and wildlife. It also promotes going back into ancient ways instead of going along with the evolution of industrial and urban living. Most prominent among the forest metal scene would probably be the Norwegian second-wave black metal band Ulver (meaning 'wolves'), who used forest imagery and themes extensively. They dedicated an entire album, entitled Nattens Madrigal, to werewolves. The band Finntroll are arguably the band that uses the most forest related imagery and lyrics. On their EP Visor om Slutet the band included several long samples of sounds heard in the forest, such as frogs croaking, birds singing and things more related to Troll Metal, like trolls eating food. It should be noted that forest metal is not exclusively produced in Scandinavia, as evidenced by the Czech Republic group Trollech." and the amazing Troll Metal: " Troll metal is black metal music dealing with trolls, goblins and related subjects. There are three important bands: Mortiis, Finntroll, and Arckanum. Whilst serving as a good genre for these bands to expand their musical style, they usually try to stay close to their usual lyrics. It is for the aforementioned reason that the three major bands sound so different: Mortiis, with a medieval ambient sound (no longer as current); Arckanum, with a pretty simple black metal sound, only with trollish lyrics; and Finntroll with a black metal/polka mix. In most songs of Finntroll, Trolls singing relate their hate of humans, especially christians, which is for them a plague to eradicate - and to eat. They relate how they prepare for battles without fear and subsequently how much humans should fear them. They fight with axes. They also tell about their rites and beliefs. They say they live in the north and humans in the south (as trolls come from the Scandinavian folklore and most troll metal bands are from Nordic countries). Trolls seem to have a 'King' and a 'Lord'. Finntroll's album covers represent trolls with very different physical appearances. One looks strong and tall and is green, one other is more elfic, his skin is gray-blue and he has pointy nose and ears, one other looks like a dwarf and others are smaller, strong, green, with big noses and pointy-hairy ears. Troll metal is often related to forest metal, since trolls live in forests and we can hear sounds of the forest in various songs. Troll Metal bands:
Though forest metal might be a one-person interpretation of a type of music (call it a self-made genre) it is a nice classification nonetheless. ![]() As for "troll metal" it seems it was a name given by the fans of the above bands and accepted by the bands themselves. Cheers ![]()

Loads of nonsense. This genre is known as folk metal. These forest/troll/agro metal etiquettes are just for laughs.

![]() I think it is not quite Folk Metal, it seems to have more things in common with Black Metal, though. |

Yeah, a couple of Cruachan's songs are worth listening to. I like the Celtic themes and the mythological content. Enough of their songs manage to stay away from falling into the usual riduculousness which is a tendency with so many of these metal bands, although "The First Battle of Moytura" is ruined by some of that hilarious yet annoying Black Metal type growling. Wasted that song for me. Other's like "The Children of Lir" were really good I tried listening to Waylander but I didn't like them.

The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth. For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish. - Edmund Spenser (writer, and British Government Official in Ireland, AD 1596). ![]() |
