Default Olmec's Colossal Heads

Following my textbook on pre-columbian art, these Colossal Heads found in the areas of influence of the Olmec culture in the Valley of Mexico sport negroid traits. Although there are several theories about the role of this huge sculptures (from 1'60 to 3 mts), there's no agreement between the experts.

What's your opinion? Are they negroid?

Bah. I learned the same in my Spanish class in high school. I already found that theory grotesc. It looks neither Congoid nor Polynesid. Just Olmec. The lips and the nostrils are so because of the dimension and the shape of the rock.

They look Borreby to me.

Anyway, Congoid, that's absurd. Primitive and coarse, sure. But remember to take the material and the craftsman into consideration.

I agree. I never said that it was a single chance of a Polynesian admixture in Olmec people. Just that these big fat ugly sculptures do remind me some Polynesian features ( or better, some features frequently found among Polynesians ). But they're not realistic, and so unfitted to classification. In reality, these sculptures do have a fat Mexican look.

I guess the author uses the term "in a broad sense". Big lips = negroid. Although I learned here that big lips are not a negroid trait...

What's surprising about these sculptures is that they don't look at all like native pre-columbine americans.

They are zentralid traits, tipical from Guatemala, Yucatan, Honduras, in other words from the zone where Olmec and Maya civilizations rised. Just compare with Rigoberta Menchu
End of the story

What drew my attention was specially the lips, whose meaning has not been explained by experts. They are excessively thick and resemble a triangle, something that doesn't match with the features of pure ethnic mayans such as Rigoberta Menchú. I guess that's what my source calls "negroid traits" --an inaccurate simplification, as you have demonstrated.

Well, then you are admitting that amerindians have negroid traits, therefore I was right. Next time think twice before trying to teach me lessons.

Other colossal heads has a very tipical amerindid facia expression

BTW thick lips can be regarded as a mere adaptation to ecuatorial and tropical climates just as these indians from Brazil

Having thick lips per se is not having negroid traits but the term negroid is used abusivelly ... if it is true then the same is true for asserting that blondism is having northen european origin and then the australian blonds aborigines come from northern Europe.

So you'll copy on a paper sheet "I will not mistake thick lips with negroid traits" 200 times and I want to have the punishment sheet scanned via PM today by 17h00... not J/K ...or yes? ..guess ...

Why are thick lips "useful" in ecuatorial and tropical climates?

And apparently also in Arctic climates?

The Chukchi, who live at the shore of the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea.
