The children in the notorious photo weren’t murdered by Ukrainian nationalists

And they weren't Polish. Besides they weren't ever attached to the tree by barbed wire to decorate “the road to the independent Ukraine” (it isn’t barbed wire actually but defects of the photo).

[...] we have the incontestable evidences that the mentioned photo […] depicts another event. It took place at night on 11-12 December 1923, the four victims are Gypsy children, and their murderer was their mother, M.D., 32. The event is described in detail in the work published in 1928 (and for sure in the press of those times).

Exactly the fact that the murderer of the children was their mother drew scientists’ attention. Poor woman killed the four children in the act of despair after her husband being arrested and after dissolving a Gypsy group where she had been before that. The belief in the threat of starving to her children led her. Next day she went to the police. […]

The first found publication which dated this photo from 1943 was in the magazine „Na Rubieży” published in Wroclaw. The photo appeared in its number 2 in year 1993 and had the explanation: „Polish children tortured and murdered by a squad of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army nearby Kozow village in Tarnopol district in autumn 1943 (from Dr. Stanisław Krzaklewski’s collections)”.

It is unknown where and who started displaying this photo as an evidence of murdering Poles in year 1943, what was simply spread by other persons in the chain.

[...] posiadamy niezaprzeczalne dowody, że wspomniane zdjęcie [...] przedstawia zupełnie inne wydarzenie. Miało ono miejsce w nocy z 11 na 12 grudnia 1923 r., cztery ofiary to dzieci cygańskie, a zabójcą była ich obłąkana matka, 32-letnia M.D. Zdarzenie jest szczegółowo opisane w pracy wydanej drukiem w 1928 r. (a zapewne też w ówczesnej prasie).

To właśnie fakt, że zabójcą dzieci była ich matka, przyciągnął uwagę uczonych. Nieszczęsna kobieta zabiła czworo dzieci w akcie rozpaczy po aresztowaniu męża i rozpadzie grupy cygańskiej, w której dotąd żyła, w przekonaniu, że grozi im niechybna śmierć głodowa. Następnego dnia zgłosiła się na policję. [...]

Najwcześniejsza odnaleziona publikacja datująca zdjęcie na 1943 r. to wydawane we Wrocławiu pismo „Na Rubieży”. Fotografia pojawia się w jego numerze 3 z 1993 r. opatrzona podpisem „Dzieci polskie zamęczone i pomordowane przez oddział Ukraińskiej Powstańczej Armii w okolicy wsi Kozowa, w woj. tarnopolskim, jesienią 1943 roku (ze zbiorów dr Stanisława Krzaklewskiego)”.

[...] Nie wiadomo, kto i kiedy zaczął przedstawiać zdjęcie jako dowód zbrodni na Polakach z 1943 r., co następne osoby w łańcuchu już tylko powielały.
