IDF invades Budapest!
Something I read on another forum:
Quote:
IDF invaded Budapest!
A well kept secret of the March 15 holiday -when we celebrated our freedom fight against the Hapsburg empire - is that the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) made a visit to Budapest. That in itself, is not unusual. What's unusual is that these were 200 fully armed military men. Apparently, they want to recruit Hungarian Jews to make the next aliyah. It will be a bit difficult, after all who wants to live in a country that Ahmedinejad vowed to wipe off the map?
Well, the idiot, far-right extremists did plan another revolution on March 15, and the head of the Hungarian Jewish community urged its people to leave the country. Apparently this was just a Purim joke. Now on a serious note, there is a problem with anti-semitism in Hungary, but here aside from dirty verbal attacks, grave desecration and minor vandalism is as far as it got. Certainly, there are no physical attacks or even threats. Compare this to France where it wouldn't be the first time that extremist set fire to a synagogue. So why would the IDF show up fully armed?
Perhaps they were invited to deal with the violent riots on March 15, which lasted for that day only. A few trash cans were burned down, and the Hungarian main police station was sprayed with bullets from an AK-47. A few weapons and molotov cocktails were found in a house but that's nothing new. It was no revolution and if anything the IDF should have gone to France last year or Denmark. Even the Danish street kids managed to burn down more cars than our hooligans. Bummer, Hungarians have to try very hard to make the BBC front-page.
It seemed so surreal. There is nothing bad about a military exchange trip, but when they're coming fully armed, it seems like our sovereignty is threatened. The exaggerated statement of the head of Hungary's Jewish community sent a little overwhelming response, but IDF should be rest assured anti-semitism is not stronger in Hungary than anywhere else. I read a blog of a man who tried to find out the demographic make up of the right-wing protesters, by joining them with an Arpad-striped flag and donning the kipah and a prayer shawl. He came home that day in one piece, so that says something.
My family is happy to say they survived the Israeli occupation of Budapest. It lasted for a few days until they went to Poland to do their recruitment work.
This is what they've left behind:
