Mental disorders strongly linked with obesity

10 July 2006

Many psychiatric disorders are strongly correlated, either positively or negatively, with the risk of obesity, US epidemiologic data indicate.

The cross-sectional survey of 9125 nationally representative US adults, which is published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, found that obese individuals are around 25% more likely to have mood and anxiety disorders, and 25% less likely to suffer substance use disorders, than their non-obese counterparts.

The study, conducted by researchers from the Center for Health Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle, used interviews to assess the prevalence of mental disorders among 6795 non-obese and 2330 obese men and women in 48 US states.

Lifetime prevalence estimates for all mood and anxiety disorders were higher among those with body mass indices >30 kg/m2, Gregory Simon and fellow investigators report. Odds ratios (ORs) were 1.21 for major depression, 1.47 for bipolar disorder, and 1.27 for panic disorder or agoraphobia.

In contrast, obesity was associated with a significantly lower lifetime risk of substance use disorders, with an OR of 0.78.

In subgroup analyses, there were no differences between men and women, conflicting with previous data. However, the association between obesity and mood disorders was strongest in non-Hispanic whites (OR=1.38) and college graduates (OR=1.44).

The authors say that the relationship between weight and mood "almost certainly works in both directions" but admit that clarifying the causal link will require additional research.

They add: "Understanding the connection between obesity and depression is an important public health issue because both of these conditions are so common and have a significant impact on our healthcare systems."

Now think of one country in the world where there are legions of fats, as well as idiots, like nowhere else.

An interesting problem is, what comes first, the predisposition to the disorders which being linked to physical predispositions, or the disorder which leads to obesity. I'd say both, depending on the individual, but a significant predisposition.

This speaks absolutely for a predisposition like being described by Ernst Kretschmer, namely that Pyknic body types being more often affected by depressions and bipolar disorders, compare:
The typologies of Kretschmer and Sheldon

Thats again striking because schizothymic and schizoid personalities seem to use substances, drugs more often than zyklothymes.

Thats again a great result since is proves that the "pathological obesity" without a normal pyknomorphic predisposition, more common in less intelligent people and lower social classes being in Europids not the main reason for the obesity, but rather a disposition to both: Obesity and emotional disorders in the Pyknic constitution, body type.

Great news which might revive the body typology Kretschmer on the long run in one way or another and will lead if going further in the same direction to a deeper understanding of body-hormonal-psychic predispositions in humans and even other mammal species too probably.

Thats important to note because all those obese people without the Pyknic predisposition will have a lower chance of getting mood and bipolar disorder because they got fat primarily because of the environmental conditions. They might get a secondary depression rather, but no typical bipolar disorder as often as the better educated, high social standard pyknomorphs which have that body not because of the conditions, but because of their disposition. They might be "even fatter" but they wouldnt be really "slim" (= leptomorphic) if not starving in any world.

The study has been produced in America, a country where millions are near to obese already at the moment of being born.

The case where a mental disorder such as depresion lead people to put on weight surely exists, but evidence points to it being secondary in that country.

When you refer to schizotomes, do you mean individuals with split personality? And zyklothomes, individuals with cyclical phases --such as depression to euphoria-- in their personality?

I think that here you may be jumping a bit into conclusions. Either that, or I fail to see how their result links to your conclusion.

Whatever happened to the good old healthy round type who was associated with an ever cheerful mood!

No. Compare the Kretschmer typology with that of Sheldon and both with this thread:
Short Sheldon Inspired Test

The names coming from the pathological extremes (Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder), but meant are normal personality variants which just show certain similarities, schizothymes-zyklothymes and all forms in between make up the majority of the healthy populations psychotype-personality type.

Thats the hypomanic or hypomanic influenced personality of the zyklothymic spectrum, after Kretschmer and the German school a normal personality type, but partly already close to a manic personality. This type is indeed the classic active Pyknic, the more passive is the subdepressive.
