Literature Literature is literally an acquaintance with letters. The term has, however, generally come to identify a collection of texts. The word literature, as a common noun, can refer to any form of writing, such as essays; while Literature, the proper noun, refers to a whole body of literary work.

"Let no man write my epitaph; for as no man who knows my motives dares not vindicate them, let no prejudice or ignorance asperse them... When my country takes her place among the nations of the earth, then, and not till then, let my epitaph be written."- Robert Emmet

“If you remove the English Army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle., unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts will be in vain. England will still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs”. - James Connolly, from Socialism and Nationalism in Shan Van Vocht, January 1897

"Only the Irish working class remains as the incorruptible inheritors of the fight for freedom in Ireland." - James Connolly, from Labour in Irish History, July 1910

"Yes, ruling by fooling, is a great British art with great Irish fools to practice on." - James Connolly From The Irish Worker, September 1914

Slovenian nationalistic sayings (with rough translations), we have a strong nationalistic tradition, probably due to history of our land (those sayings are as much actual now as they were centuries ago), this are my favourite:

"Boljša domača gruda,
kot na tujem zlata ruda."

TRANSLATION: "Better home soil than foreign gold (gold in foreign lands)."

Clearly says everything that has to be said on the issue of emigration for economical reasons. Many Slovenians from western Slovenia went to America 100 years ago, their grandchildren are probably some American flag-waving idiots now...

"Veliko mesto – velika samota."

TRANSLATION: "Big city - big loneliness"

"Starih šeg ne vseh zatreti, novih pa ne vseh sprejeti."

TRANSLATION: "Don't forget every old tradition and don't accept every new one"

"Bolje je malo lastnega, kakor mnogo tujega."

TRANSLATION: "Better little of your own, than plenty of foreign"

"Kdor se s tujim jezikom pači, z domačim berači."

TRANSLATION: "Who 'speaks' (don't know how I would translate this one, it's derogative, like making a fool out of himself because he thinks he's better because speaking/using words from foreign language) foreign language, is begging with his own language"

"Neumen je tisti ptič, ki se sramuje svojega gnezda."

TRANSLATION: "The bird which is ashamed of his own nest is a fool"

Земи ги........очиве
моиве две остри сабји
нанижи си ги како два
остри синџири
околу твоите бели гради.
Земи ја........устава
од неа вода да пиеш
јас ќе си одам в планина
и ќе ти бидам комита.
Јас сум ти твојот комита
Ристо Беломорски
од Грамос и Вичо
планина. ”

"Take my....eyes,
mine two sharp sabers.
put them like two sharp chains
over your white breasts.
Take my....mouth
to drink water from it,
I will go to the mountain
and will be your rebel (komita)
I'm your rebel,
Risto Belomorski
from Gramos and Vicho mountain."

Poem "Macedonia" by Risto Shishkov

That is mine translation
