Girl, 12, Slashed Across Neck By Knife Nut

A 12-year-old girl underwent emergency surgery after being slashed across the neck by a crazed knife nut while walking with her parents as they enjoyed a holiday in London.

Police say the German girl, her sister and her parents were walking back to their hotel on the first day of their holiday when she was attacked from behind by a knife-wielding thug of "Arab appearance".

He pushed her head to one side before slashing her across the neck.

The traumatised girl was rushed to hospital by a passing taxi driver and underwent an emergency operation after suffering a "serious slash wound" to her neck. She has since been discharged.

However, police are hunting the knifeman who calmly walked away from the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information as they hunt the slasher amid fears he could strike again.

Detective Inspector Paul Armstrong, of Paddington CID who is leading the investigation, said: "We were informed by a taxi driver at about 11pm on Monday night of an attack on a young girl, who had been assaulted by a man while walking with her parents and sister along Edgware Rd in Paddington.

"The girl was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington by the cab driver immediately after the attack.

"On arrival at the hospital, police discovered the girl had suffered a serious slash wound to her neck, believed caused by a sharp instrument. She has been discharged today, after an operation."

DI Armstrong added: "The family were tourists in London, who had only arrived that day and were simply making their way back to their hotel after an evening out.

"At around 10.45pm they were walking south along Edgware Road. When they reached the junction near Burwood Place the suspect, a man aged about 30-years-old, described as Arabic in appearance, 6ft tall, with short black hair and wearing a three-quarter length dark leather jacket, approached the victim from behind and pushed her head to one side. He then slashed her across the neck with a sharp instrument.

"He then walked away, we believe towards Harrowby Street. I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this unprovoked attack to please contact police with information.

"A passer-by flagged down a taxi and the victim was taken to a hospital."
