Spanish police arrested thirteen British drug traffickers in several cities on the Costa del Sol, the area around the city of Málaga on the south coast. The operation, code-named Sugar, was carried out by the national police and Civil Guard in collaboration with the British police. Eleven firearms, €150,000 in cash, six luxury cars, and false identification papers were confiscated, and accounts in three Spanish banks have been blocked. The traffickers were moving drugs from Spain to the United Kingdom, especially to Liverpool and Yorkshire, as well as laundering their profits. The police consider them "very dangerous." The organization's leader is British of Pakistani origin, and he controlled a network of collaborators and intermediaries in Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, and Dubai. Several gang members have committed violent crimes; five of them are wanted by British or Dutch authorities for murder. Based on the evidence discovered during the operation, international arrest warrants have been issued for seven more men, all British. The Spanish police is currently investigating more than 1500 drug-trafficking organizations within Spain.
