Poland's new fascination with Jews

IN A 1973 ESSAY, Cynthia Ozick speculated on how Jews would be remembered if, like every other nation of antiquity, they had vanished long ago. As people speak today of ''the glory that was Greece," she mused, the achievements of the long-gone Jews would be celebrated as ''the genius that was Israel."

Well, the first few paragraphs prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that Jews are legends in their own minds.

It is interesting that this Jewish lady did not state the actual number of Jews in Poland before the war or the actual number of Jews killed during the war years. Nor did she state the actual number of Jews who left Poland after the war. Percentages, which were stated, are meaningless without a baseline number.

So besides hyping the importance of each Jew, "Jewish culture", and "Jewish Civilization" as well as attempting to obscure actual numbers of Jews at any given time, what she seems to be doing is bemoaning the lack of Jews in modern Poland as if the number of Jews present in a society is a measure of all things that are good.

In short she says: More Jews=Greater Happiness. This is the standard Jewish line which they say over and over again and very subtlely to non-Jews. The response should always be to put the issue in stark contrast by responding to it with this queston: Would Poland or the world be better with more or less Jews in it? Every non-Jew knows the answer.
