Just in the main center (Porto Alegre) of my state (Rio Grande do Sul) the jews live in 3 of the biggest neighbourhoods of the city - as well as schools, sinagogues, clubs, etc. Porto Alegre has almost 2 million of inhabitants (more than 3 million in the metropolitan area), hence, there are probably more than 35.000~50.000 jews living in Porto Alegre.

Every brazilian big city has jews - so, therefore, I believe the number of the jews in Brazil is much more near from 500.000 than to 98.000. Years ago government made a research that pointed 300.000 jews living here... I don't know where are they now, bot obviously they were not murdered in gas chambers.

I suspect 275,000 is a number of practicing Judaists. Make your own calculations and you will obtain more or less trustworthy number.

Probably that's the reason we get such low numbers - even in US of A. It's an interesting phenomena that they are declaring themselves atheists, buddhists... bah, perhaps in the future we'll see a jewish pagan movement uprising.

Sure, the fact is in Russia a very high per cent of Jews bear German names, many simply changed German names to Russian-sounding ones to avoid Stalinist purges in the 30's and become more socially acceptable. For example, in my school class there were 3 Jews, two of them bearing German names. In the Soviet times having this kind of name prohibited you from taking certain job positions (officials, journalists, military, etc).

Yes, traditionally many, if not majority of Russian Jews spoke Yiddish as their mother language. Not to forget that many Jews we inherited from the territories once belonging to the Hapsburg Empire (Westernmost Ukraine) and Poland (Western Ukraine, Western Belarus), some came directly from Germany or via the Baltic States (former Livonian Order) where the ruling elite and townsfolk were mainly German-speaking (Alfred Rosenberg is rumoured to be one of the better known examples of Baltic 'German' Jews, famous composer Alfred Schnittke's father is another good example). We had a Russian would-be customer for a time, who we gathered that he was somehow maffioso from what he had told us. His looks were Eastern Slavic, though later he admitted being Jewish on his mother's side.

Not zionists for sure. While we can point out the pronounced Jewish character of some Russian mafia groups, it's not a Jewish organization by and large, if we're allowed to speak of such an entity at all. Actually it's not as hierarchical as one might believe it to be.

What's interesting is that Russian criminal slang borrowed a lot of words from Yiddish, which probably explains this nation's early inclinations towards taking control over the criminal activity in Russia. There's a whole musical genre called 'blatnaya pesnya' ('a criminal song') or sometimes rather ironically 'Russian chansons' (!), which is primarily derived from Jewish song and dance tradition.
