Rome and Jerusalem
There's a pretty good book called Rome and Jerusalem, though written by a Jew, it explains the incompatibility of the two civilizations and gives a historical narrative from Roman times and all the trouble they caused the Romans, and traces the roots of it; very relevant to this.
