Berlin (dpa) - Artists from Israel and Germany will present a diverse programme of music, theatre, films and recitals at the annual Jewish Cultural Days opening in Berlin this month.
A series of concerts at a newly restored synagogue in the east Berlin suburb of Prenzlauer Berg highlight the festival running from August 31 to September 9, organizers said Tuesday.
The synagogue in tree-lined Rykestrasse has a seating capacity of 1,200, making it the largest in Germany. It will also be used for concerts, following three years of renovation.
The main attraction is a musical evening on September 8 entitled Selma - Shrouded in Desire. It features German hip-hop and pop artists singing poems by Holocaust victim Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger.

Romanian-born Meerbaum-Eisinger perished in 1942 at the age of 18 in a Nazi labour camp in Ukraine. Her poems were set to music by Swiss jazz musician David Klein.
A Berlin radio station youth orchestra and the David Klein Quintett will accompany the singers.
Another concert evening on September 6 features the works of Jewish composers Gideon Klein, Erwin Schulhoff and Hans Krasa, who were murdered by the Nazis.
Their works, written and first performed in the Theresienstadt concentration camp in what is now the Czech Republic, will be played by violinist Daniel Hope and other musicians.
There will also be films and an exhibition about the life and works of Austrian playwright Arthur Schnitzler at the capital's Literaturhaus.
On September 1, five synagogues and Jewish religious centres will stay open throughout the night for visitors to the festival.
"Berlin is proud that Jewish life and Jewish culture is thriving once again in our city," the capital's governing mayor, Klaus Wowereit, said in a message marking the event.
