Default Carter: Stop favoring Fatah over Hamas

Carter: Stop favoring Fatah over Hamas

The United States, Israel and the European Union must end their policy of favoring Fatah over Hamas, or they will doom the Palestinian people to deepening conflict between the rival movements, former US President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday.
Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who was addressing a conference of Irish human rights officials, said the Bush administration's refusal to accept the 2006 election victory of Hamas was "criminal."

Dershowitz: Jimmy Carter is a liar Carter said Hamas, besides winning a fair and democratic mandate that should have entitled it to lead the Palestinian government, had proven itself to be far more organized in its political and military showdowns with the Fatah movement of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
Hamas fighters routed Fatah in their violent takeover of the Gaza Strip last week. The split prompted Abbas to dissolve the power-sharing government with his rivals in Hamas and set up a Fatah-led administration to govern the West Bank.
Carter said the American-Israeli-European consensus to reopen direct aid to the new government in the West Bank, but to deny the same to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, represented an "effort to divide Palestinians into two peoples."
While seeking to boycott the Hamas leadership for of its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel, Europe and the US have continued to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through the United Nations and other organizations.

During his speech to Ireland's eighth annual Forum on Human Rights, the 83-year-old former president said monitors from his Carter Center observed the 2006 election in which Hamas won 42 percent of the popular vote and a majority of parliamentary seats.
Carter said that election was "orderly and fair" and Hamas triumphed, in part, because it was "shrewd in selecting candidates," whereas a divided, corrupt Fatah ran multiple candidates for single seats.

Far from encouraging Hamas's move into parliamentary politics, Carter said the US and Israel, with European Union acquiescence, has sought to subvert the outcome by shunning Hamas and helping Abbas to keep the reins of political and military power.
"That action was criminal," he said in a news conference after his speech.
"The United States and Israel decided to punish all the people in Palestine and did everything they could to deter a compromise between Hamas and Fatah," he said.
Carter said the United States and others supplied the Fatah-controlled security forces in Gaza with vastly superior weaponry in hopes they would "conquer Hamas in Gaza" - but Hamas this month routed Fatah because of its "superior skills and discipline."
He said plans to reopen international aid to the West Bank, but clamp down on aid to Gaza, would imprison 1.4 million Gazans. He called for both territories to be treated equally.

"This effort to divide Palestinians into two peoples now is a step in the wrong direction," he said. "All efforts of the international community should be to reconcile the two, but there's no effort from the outside to bring the two together."
Carter was pessimistic this would happen soon.
"I don't see at this point any possibility that public officials in the United States, or in Israel, or the European Union are going to take action to bring about reconciliation," he said.

I have a lot of respect for what Jimmy Carter has done recently. I hope his visit to Dublin encourages Ireland to break away from the current EU policy on Hamas.

Alan Dershowitz is a morally repulsive man.

Don't you think that it would make more sense to support Al-Fatah?

Hamas was elected fairly so it shouldn't be for outsiders to favour the group they wished had won. The aid should go to the Palestinian Authority and the democratically elected officials who are in charge of it.

Here is a related story which I find quite positive:
Quote:

Carter's election body get €200,000 boost

Last Updated: 18/06/2007 21:33

The Government is to give €200,000 funding to a foundation run by former US president Jimmy Carter.
The allocation from Irish Aid will support the Carter Centre to monitor elections in trouble spots around the world.
The contract will be signed at the annual Human Rights Forum event at Croke Park tomorrow.
Mr Carter, who won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, today met with President Mary McAleese and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in Dublin.
The 39th US president served one term in the White House from 1977-1981 and was succeeded by Ronald Reagan.
Mr Carter has since travelled extensively to monitor international elections, conduct peace negotiations and establish relief efforts.
Irish Aid said the funding will help the Carter Centre to carry out its work without having to wait for finance to be raised.
Irish Aid funded the Carter Centre by €50,000 in 2005 and €70,000 in 2006.
A spokesman added: "The Carter Centre is the only non-governmental organisation that Irish Aid supports in this area. This initiative is in line with our move to provide strategic funding multi-annual support for our key partners. The organisation is however, very reliant on former President Carter and his reputation."
Mr Carter was the 76th Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.

Or maybe not. I refuse to give any support to Hamas.

Fatah is a secularist, moderate party which is far more agreeable to the goals of materialistic, secular, Trans-national Capitalism.

I don't have any support for Hamas.
But they at least have the positive point of being far more opposed to International Liberal Secular Capitalism than some group like Fatah.

These hypocrites in the USA/UK and other corrupt western governments constantly use "democracy" to justify their own tyranny and aggression across the world. They can't just sweep it to the side because they think they can do business more easily with the group that lost an election.

You make your bed, you lie in it.

I'd rather have a European Christian verison of Hamas in power here than the Fatah-like parties we already have.

Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation.

Well, ideologically, theoretically speaking I would rather support the Fatah since it is a nationalist, non-Islamist party.

However since modern-day Fatah is only the shadow of what it used to be before Oslo accords and it is now a mere puppet of Israel... Well, I mean, what would be the best solution for European nationalists, a Pax Israeli in the Middle-East or the start of a generalized conflict in this area between the Anglo-Jewish Evil Axis and the Islamic world, which would mean a subsequent agitation in Muslim communities living in Europe, huh ?

I see some "hope" in the Fatah's Young Guard though, led by Marwan Barghouti (who is currently jailed in Israeli high security prison), with the Tanzim militia and Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade. If I'm not mistaken they have recently split from Fatah because of the entrenched corruption in the party and the policy of collaboration with Israel and created a new movement. They oppose both Abbas-like so-called "nationalists" (who seem to be the Palestinian UMP) and Hamas' islamists.

My reasoning is far more simple. I wouldn't support a group (Hamas) that has vowed to conquer all the way to Al-Andalus.

As an answer to Milesian's comment, I'm not thinking of what I would support here but with who I would side there.

Me too.

hamas has already declared its territory as subject to islamic law in its purest form.

In a word, palestinians will become another spearhead of jihad.

As if they had not been already ideologized by communists, now another fundamentalism is taking the place of communism.

Not necessarily what displeases Israel is automatically for us.

We have to keep focused on our goals.

What pleases or displease any of our non european competitors is secundary.

I obviously agree on the fact that jewish elites are still one of our mortal enemies.

There is very few love for european nationalism among them, to be calling non love what is hatred.

On certain issues like global jihad there can be casual coincidences of view, since certain phenomenons are dangerous for both us and them.

But while they grant themselves an high and healthy dose of nationalism we are denied even the minimum necessary, and their elites are among the first culprits for this state of affairs.
