I’m also part of what some call the « Skadi migration » (though only about 10 to 20 former Skadi members joined since its closing, which is not that much) and I sincerely hope that this influx of Germanic members will be fruitful.
I’ve spent quite some time browsing this forum since I am aware of its existence (my account dates back to the end of March) and think it a vast and interesting community, of which I hope to be a “full member” despite my “alien” geographical situation. I am a French-Canadian, or Québécois as some will probably keep telling me, born and bred in Québec. My male ancestors were farmers and fishermen hailing from Normandie (mostly), Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire and Bretagne, essentially (North-West France, to go short). I also have an Irish feminine ancestor dating back to the great migration due to the famine in Ireland, 19th century. The female side of the French-Canadian general ancestry comes from Isle-de-France; they were mostly young women taken from orphanages to populate New France. I am interested in a whole variety of topic regarding current and historical Europe, which I won’t list here. Let’s say a great part of this forum finds an echo in me, except some narrow regional issues. I am fascinated by abstract topics of all kind. A warm thank you, Kurtz PS Why a German pseudo? Welcome Kurtz.
I am surprised that you are in Canada, I always thought you had died back in the Belgian congo. Weird.

Bienvenue sur Stirpes! En espérant que tu t'y plairas!
Back to English... It is nice and interesting to have a French-Canadian member here, and I like this "New France" terminology. ![]() I see that you have put "Normandie" as location in your profile... do you live there or in Quebec ?

I live in Québec (Québec city), but it is far from impossible that I move (along with my companion, who agrees) to Northern France someday. For the whole "Normandie" thing, it originates in the fact that it is the region that gave Québec most of its founding colons (I also like to think myself as an old stock Norman, because my norman ancestry dates back to the middle of the 17th century, which is quite old even for New World standards).
Thanks all for the warm welcome ![]() |

What about Bretons and Saintongeais in Québec?

There were many, but not as much as Normans. This is reflected by original French-Canadian surnames.
This map shows the frequence of the last name of my maternal grandmother in France, and also indirectly indicates the N-W origin of most French surnames in Québec (though the correlation is a coicidence). The Normandie-Atlantique axis is clearly showed. ![]() |
