Islamic 'warriors' urged to protect Krekar Aftenposten Norway July 13, 2005 A bulletin posted on a password-protected Internet forum linked to militant Muslims claims that Mullah Krekar of Oslo is in danger, following last week's assassination of the Egyptian ambassador in Iraq. ![]() Mullah Krekar, battling a deportation order in Norway, allegedly is the target of a radical group that links him to last week's murder of the Egyptian ambassador in Iraq. A decision on Krekar's appeal of his pending deportation isn't expected until September. A contributor to the forum, which the anti-terrorist SITE Institute in Washington believes is tied to al-Qaida, calls on "Europe's mujahedin warriors" to prepare to protect Krekar, who came to Norway as a refugee in the early 1990s. Krekar, whom the Norwegian authorities are currently trying to deport, may be the target of an Egyptian group's quest for revenge for the death of Egypt's ambassador, writes contributor "Abu Trab al-Jazaerie," or "the man from Algeria." He urges the mujahedin in Europe "to respond with more than the same" if something should happen to Krekar. He claims he received "special news" from a "brother" in Egypt, who warned that the Egyptians were targeting Krekar. That's apparently because Krekar is viewed as one of the founders of the guerrilla group Ansar al-Islam, which many claim evolved into Ansar al-Sunnah. That group in turn has alleged ties to al-Qaida's branch in Iraq, which has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and murder of Egypt's ambassador. Krekar's lawyer and spokesman, Brynjar Meling, has made himself unavailable for comment since he's on summer holiday. Krekar's brother, Khalid Faraj Ahmad, told Aftenposten.no that he didn't want to comment on the interpretation of the Internet forum's posting by SITE. Krekar himself has long claimed he maintains no ties to Ansar al-Islam. SITE (Search for International Terrorist Entities Institute), meanwhile, is a volunteer organization that tries to monitor activity by groups and individuals linked to terrorism. [source]

Mysterious break-in at Oslo mosque Aftenposten Norway July 14, 2005 An Oslo mosque was ransacked three days after the terrorist attacks in London last week. The only things taken, however, were some videotapes, including one from a meeting at the mosque on Sunday. The burglars ignored thousands of kroner in cash, expensive computer equipment and other valuable items lying in the mosque in Oslo's Tveita district. Officials at the Islamic Centre tied to the mosque are therefore baffled. They can't figure out, reports newspaper VG, what could have been so interesting on the videotape that warranted its theft? Around 80 persons were taped during Sunday's meeting at the mosque. Many of them spoke about the London bombings, according to VG. Some now fear that government intelligence officials were behind the break-in. Others suspect that someone who attended the meeting may have stolen the tapes, after regretting what was said. "If it had been racists, they would have written anti-Islamic comments on the walls, or vandalized the property," sats Asima Tehseen of the Tauheed Islamic Centre. [source]
