Three men have been charged over the July 7 terror attacks on London which killed 52 people, Scotland Yard said today.
In a statement, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, of the Metropolitan police, said the three men who had been charged were those who had been detained on March 22.
Waheed Ali, 23, Sadeer Saleem, 26, and Mohammed Shakil, 30, are accused of conspiring with the four 7/7 suicide bombers, who killed 52 innocent people.
They are the first to be charged in connection with the attacks in London, which also injured more than 900 people.
Mr Clarke said all three men were from Beeston, Leeds, although Mr Ali had most recently been living in east London.
Susan Hemming, head of the counter terrorism division of the Crown Prosecution Service, said the three had been charged "that between November 1 2004 and June 29 2005 they unlawfully and maliciously conspired" with the London bombers and others "to cause explosions on the Transport for London system and/or tourist attractions in London".
She added: "The allegation is that they were involved in reconnaissance and planning for a plot with those ultimately responsible for the bombings on July 7 before the plan was finalised."
Mr Clarke, who is also head of Scotland Yard's Counter Terrorism Command, said the investigation into the bombings had now reached "a new stage".
Today's charges followed 21 months of "intense investigation" by his force and West Yorkshire police into the "murder of 52 innocent victims", he said. "I appreciate that bringing these charges will have an impact on many people. For some it will bring back horrible memories of that terrible day. For others there may be some relief that after such a length of time there is some visible progress in an investigation that has had to be kept secret."
